You are actually right. Like I'm replaying Pokémon White and holy crap I got my shit kicked in by the first gym leader. I was like excuse me? Because of the change in the game exp curve which makes grinding harder (unless you Audino hunt) it means that there's a chance that you will be under level for the first gym. Plus the gym leader strategy is use work up to raise attack which means you can get in a no win situation easy.

IMO Gen 5 was the peak of what gym leaders represented in the pokemon games. They got such a kickass and fun theme and had a lot more story relevancy than did past gym leaders. A good mix of memorable and challenging. Hopefully Gen 8 does something similar if gym leaders are returning

Is it just me, or did the gym leaders of B/W have a better purpose than the others. Not only does their dialogue make them all unique and rememberable, but they also do more than any other gym leaders have: They drive the story, help you on your journey, and even help you stop Team Plasma, who, I might add, also seem to be purposeful as well.

@Ian & Ian Da thing is, Unova protagonist still does that. No way did the gym leaders help against N nor could they if they wanted to. Killing the grunts and sages(aside from Ghetsis) doesn’t matter which is why the gym leaders stopped the sages so the plot can go smoothly without interruption.

These gym leaders have so much personality and interactions with each other, protagonists, rivals, E4s and champions. I mean, you see Cynthia gathering all the ladies in Undella (Shauntal, Lenora, Caitlin -who owns the villa-, etc), while Alder, Brycen and Marshal are close friends. Lenora and Burgh too. Elesa and Skyla are really close as well. Clay is super important in the story and helps you and your friends a lot in both BW and the sequels. Elesa became vital to Bianca's character development. Then Memory Link came in B2W2 and gave them even more dialogue and interesting interactions, as well as B2W2 themselves. All in all the most developed gym cast of all time. Galar surely has a really really good set of leaders as well, they just needed more screentime, the rare cards gave us really nice info but it would've been nice too actually see those things, especially Melony and Gordie's family dynamics.

Okay, here's a funny story about Skyla's gym that I had.
Back when I was around nine or ten-ish, I finally reached Skyla's gym, and beat all of the trainers you have to battle, until I reached a canon that I couldn't go into for some reason. I kept on getting frustrated about it, and I kept on battling wild Pokemon for about five months. Soon, I watched a let's play of Black and White, and saw the enterance of the canon that I needed to go into. Soon, I reached Skyla, and I beat her with flying colors, due to leveling up my Samurott to around level 70, and on the same day, beat the two gyms after that.

Technically gen 6 did that too but didnt do as good of a job at conveying it as gen 5 did. Say what you might about gen 8, im glad they kinda went back to a bit of the "Gym leaders having their own lives and jobs" and gym leaders feeling more like actual characters than just bosses for the sake of story progression thing with SwSh, still not as affectively as gen 5 but a step in the right direction

I like how the gym leaders somehow play a major-ish role in your journey. The first gym leader (Cress, Chili, Cilan) are there to teach you type disadvantages. Lenora and Burgh ends up "introducing" you to Team Plasma and how they are the villain team. Elesa actually had a heartfelt scene with your rival Bianca and her father. Elesa explains that eventually you have to let your children go and that it'll be ok. I kinda forgot the rest since i havent played gen 5 in a while but correct me if im wrong, it's how i viewed the gym leaders

Pokemon B/W were not the first Pokemon games I had ever played, but they were the first games I got to play when they first came out, and the first games I played where I began to realize the games required a lot of strategy. Unova was such a good region. I don't understand it's hate. It's one of my favorite generations! All these people (mostly genwunners) complaining about Pokemon designs like garbador and vanillish when they aren't really even as bad as they make them. Game freak was trying to be creative. I mean no one seems to remember that muk is literally just a pile of sludge.(I don't hate muk though) You're honestly gonna let a couple "bad" ruin the whole game for you? Really? At least give all the regions a chance.

I love this song. The beginning gets you excited right as you enter the battle. Then it slows down and you realized that you don't want to win, but you want to have fun. That's why this gym leader theme is the best.

The only thing bad about gen 5 is the lack of water pokes (not a fan of basculin). Other than that, this game was a damn masterpiece. The music, the story, the characters, and the world tournament in BW2! I'm glad to see a great number of people that enjoyed gen 5. Who else was disappointed that the anime for BW2 never happened? The trailer left us with blue balls

All gym leaders in pokemon in a nutshell except Pokemon BW/BW2
Almost everyone:We just stand around waiting for kids to come and "try" to lose so they can win special badges!
Lt. Surge: I served in a very vague yet horrible pokemon war, and I think my pokemon have ptsd. I'll just force them to fight a 10 year old's pokemons. No big deal.
Every gym leader in pokemon black and white: We actually have jobs that we go to when not fighting 10 year olds!

I remember playing till 5 am at this game, and losing against Lenora a million times. My sister constantly reminds me of this feat, cause we were on the same room, and as she woke up at 5 am, she asked me "What are you doing...?" and i told her "I GOT MY 3RD GYM MEDAL". I think we're both going to keep this memory till the end of time, lel

Did you even ever fight in the Unova Tournament in the PWT? It has all of the Gym Leaders to fight as much as you want. Plus beating it once unlocks the Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh Tournaments with their respective Gym Leaders.

Ironically, revisiting Black during my first ever Nuzlocke run, Elesa was the easiest fight for me out the ones so far.

@Ishui Kamakura Oh you can just repel up to make sure you don't run into a pidove of something but I get what you're saying about bad encounters though

@OneGoofyGoober- one my luck is terrible when it comes to encounters, when I am on my way to the rustling grass, I always failed because on my way there I got an encounter on a non rustling grass

@Ishui Kamakura First off if I came off as negative, My bad, However if you are nuzlocking BW if you get audino in the dreamyard in the shaking grass you can get Throh in the shaking grass west of Necrene city so if you got audino before you can get a almost guaranteed win against Lenora I say almost because of crits and bad luck

I remember sweeping the entirety of clay’s gym with just my starter, it was the only gym that was that easy for me. This (along with B2/W2) was the last game that had any sort of real difficulty
