Portugal. The Man centered on frontman John Gourley’s abstract musical approach and corresponding upbringing. He was raised in a sort of technological isolation: his log cabin home in the winter wasteland of the fringes of Wasilla, Alaska was powered by a generator and had no telephone. Both of his parents helped completely immerse him in the unique lifestyle that comes with a land of seasonal darkness and perpetual cold with their jobs as dog sled mushers. Gourley’s innate curiosity and individual spirit combined with a fascination with science fiction and experiences of homelessness create a distinctly transcendent sound that is always open to interpretation and change.

The album's title was inspired by an original 1969 Woodstock music festival ticket stub owned by Gourley's father. It led Gourley to a realization that almost 50 years later, music has the same mission as then – "to comment on societal and political unease." "We worked with so many rad people on this album, but ended up with just the four of us in a basement at 4 a.m. trying to say something that mattered," said Gourley. "Trying to write music that would help people feel they're not alone, even if they're angry or feeling lost." Woodstock was released on June 16, 2017. John Gourley and Zoe Manville married on New Year's Eve 2017.
Got It All
Portugal. The Man Lyrics

If so then show me how
We'll shake, shake, shake the night away
We shook, shook, shook the night away
Wanna love like this love was young
But will I die as I become
Blinded at the bottom of it all?
'Til the revolution comes
Got it all, you got it all, you got it all
'Til the revolution comes
I want a world like (The revolution comes)
My teacher taught me it would be (The revolution comes)
I want a love like
My parents told me it would be
When I was born I defied your times
But they were nothing, nothing like mine
We'll shake, shake, shake the night away
We shook, shook, shook the night away
Feels like school again
But learning's all right there
Blinded at the bottom of it all
You got it all, you got it all, you got it all
'Til the revolution comes
Got it all, you got it all, you got it all
'Til the revolution comes
I want a world like (The revolution comes)
My teacher taught me it would be (The revolution comes)
I want a love like
My parents told me it would be
We'll shake, shake, shake the night away
We shook, shook, shook the night away
This can't be living now
If so then show me how
And we'll find it
At the bottom of it all
You got it all, you got it all, you got it all
'Til the revolution comes
Got it all, you got it all, you got it all
'Til the revolution comes
I want a world like (The revolution comes)
My teacher taught me it would be (The revolution comes)
I want a love like
My parents told me it would be
The lyrics of "Got It All" by Portugal. The Man talks about the desire for a better world and a love that is pure and true. The song opens with a question: "This can't be living now, if so then show me how?" It is a call for change and a search for meaning. The chorus repeats "You got it all, you got it all, you got it all 'Til the revolution comes" which suggests that although everything seems fine now, there is a need for a revolution, a drastic change that will take everything to another level.
The lyrics then delve into the singer's personal journey, wanting a love and world that they were taught about by their parents and teachers, but feeling blinded by the world at the bottom of it all. The song ends with a similar line as the beginning, "This can't be living now, If so then show me how, and we'll find it at the bottom of it all" suggesting that there is a way forward, but one must dig deep to find it.
