*Note:
In the early 90s, the name Psyche was also used as an alias of Detroit techno artist Carl Craig. Under this early pseudonym the legendary Detroit based techno producer released a few 12"s on Transmat - later compiled onto 'Elements', alongside other material written under his BFC alias, and released on Craig's own Planet E label.
Also, a short lived west coast Scottish new wave/rock band called Psyche released a 7" single in 1982.
The Beyond
Psyche Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But I never expected this at all
The security we dream about
Makes us desperate and confused
And the feeling returns
Even when the night is falling
Somewhere beyond the lights
Beyond the lights
It's in our minds
Illusions can sometimes be swallowed
Protection stays within our hearts
Pay the price for wanting more
Believing in this cruel uncertainty
And the feeling returns
Even when the night is falling
Somewhere beyond the lights
What shall become of us
?
The lyrics of Psyche's song The Beyond are a portrayal of the human insecurities and fears regarding the unknown future. The opening lines, "There are promises meant to be kept, but I never expected this at all," imply a sense of disillusionment and disappointment. The promises probably refer to the expectations we have from life, which, more often than not, go unfulfilled. The next lines, "The security we dream about makes us desperate and confused," suggest that the idea of security is nothing but an illusion that leads to confusion and desperation. The lyrics convey the message that the feeling of security is only temporary and eventually gives way to doubts and insecurities.
The chorus of the song, "And the feeling returns, even when the night is falling, somewhere beyond the lights, what shall become of us?" portrays the sense of helplessness that pervades when one is confronted with the unknown. The "feeling" that returns could be the feeling of doubt or insecurity, and the "lights" could be symbolic of hope or a sense of security that we seek.
The subsequent lines, "Illusions can sometimes be swallowed, protection stays within our hearts, pay the price for wanting more, believing in this cruel uncertainty," emphasize the fact that illusions and delusions, even though they can be comfortable or reassuring, can have a high cost.
