While their early efforts are generally categorized as aggrotech, later releases incorporated a disparate set of musical and aesthetic influences, notably black metal and industrial metal. They belonged to the so-called "second wave" of American harsh ebm, along with bands such as Dawn of Ashes, Die Sektor, and Tactical Sekt.
The group went on their first hiatus at the end of 2010 due to Bellum's opiate addiction, but returned to the stage in October 2011 for a performance in New York and released their last album Order of the Shadow: Act I in 2013.
After Rotny Ford and Jon Siren quit the band in March 2014, Nero Bellum stated on his personal Facebook page that he wanted to perform one last series of concerts before putting an end to the band. Live band members Dorian Starchild (guitar), Brent Ashley (bass), and Kriz Dk (drums) joined Psyclon Nine for their final performances.
A remix for Limnus entitled The Devils Are Inside the Walls (Psyclon Nine Remix) was released in August 2014, followed by a second hiatus that lasted 8 months.
On April 13, 2015, Psyclon Nine created a new official Facebook page and announced a live performance at the L.A. Dark United Underground in Los Angeles, CA on May 2, 2015. The reformed lineup for the show featured Nero Bellum (vocals), Dorian Starchild (guitars), Ashes (guitars), and Raanen Bozzio (drums).
They went on to do a few more shows, resulting in Psyclon Nine returning as a live band. Raanen Bozzio was subsequently replaced by Anthem on electronic drums.
The band name is a malapropism of Zyklon B, the trade name of hydrogen cyanide used in the gas chambers during the holocaust. The "Nine" is used because of the number's significance in Aleister Crowley's numerological writings.

Behind a Serrated Grin
Psyclon Nine Lyrics

A maimed savior
Bathed in rancor to punish their behavior
Your institution of persecution
One solution to start from a clean slate
He doesn't say that he will save us
He doesn't say that he will save us
Behind a serrated grin
He fails to hide his serrated grin
He fails to hide his serrated grin
He fails to hide his serrated grin
He fails to hide his serrated grin

The lyrics to Psyclon Nine's "Behind a Serrated Grin" are dark and cryptic, with possible references to themes such as persecution, revenge, and the nature of salvation. The opening lines speak of praying for a "maimed savior," someone who may have been injured and is thus seen as a martyr for their cause. The lyrics then mention "rancor," which suggests anger or bitterness, and an institution of persecution, which hints at a struggle against some oppressive force. The lines "One solution to start from a clean slate" could be interpreted as a call for violent overthrow or a do-over of some sort.
The chorus of the song repeats the line "He doesn't say that he will save us" multiple times, indicating that salvation may be uncertain or unattainable. The repeated refrain "Behind a serrated grin" suggests that someone is hiding their true thoughts or intentions. The inclusion of the phrase "Nominie dei nostri satanas luciferi exelci" throughout the song can be translated to "In the name of our god Satan, Lucifer, and the Devil," adding a chilling tone to the lyrics.
Overall, "Behind a Serrated Grin" is a song full of symbolism and ambiguity, with possible references to religion, violence, and hidden agendas. The repeated chorus and use of a foreign language adds to the ominous feel of the song.

"He doesn't say that He will save us. He says that we will save ourselves." is a line from the film 'End of Days' with Arnie and Gabriel duking it out.

Absolutely infernal track. Those deep and massive beats that just keep going and then all the hellish synths come to create this inferno. Pure martial catchiness.
I wish Nero would come back to this godlike sound.
