Ms. Portman has composed the scores for dozens of feature films, including "Emma", "Chocolat", "Oliver Twist", "The Cider House Rules", "The Duchess", and "Never Let Me Go".
She was the first female composer to win an Academy Award in the category of Best Musical or Comedy Score (for "Emma" in 1996). Ms. Portman was also nominated for Academy Awards for her scores for "The Cider House Rules" in 1999 and "Chocolat" in 2000.
She composed a score for the film "Dangerous Beauty," but it was unused; George Fenton replaced her, but some of her material still remains in the film. For television she composed the score for all thirteen episodes of Jim Henson's The Storyteller and two episodes of The Jim Henson Hour ("Monster Maker" and "Living with Dinosaurs"). Her other works include a children's opera, The Little Prince, which was later adapted for television, and Little House on the Prairie, a musical based upon the Laura Ingalls Wilder books "Little House on the Prairie" (2008). Ms. Portman was commissioned to write a piece of choral music for the BBC Proms series in August 2007.
On 19 May 2010, she was honored at the BMI Film & TV Awards with the Richard Kirk Award which is bestowed on composers who have made significant contributions to the realm of film and television music. Portman made BMI history as she became the first woman composer to receive the honor.
Portman was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2010 New Year Honours.

Ant Farm
Rachel Portman Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But I love a few things
And you are one of them
Hard to believe
After all of these years
But you are one of them
I'm thinking:
Everybody move along
I've got a sad-hearted needing
To belong
Nevertheless
It's all the mess you made
But I can let it go
Walk down the street
I'm thinking:
Look at all the ants in a farm
I've got a sad-hearted feeling
To harm
Hate a lot of things
But I love a few things
And you are one of them
One possible interpretation of Rachel Portman's Ant Farm is that it is an expression of the love-hate relationship that many people have with the world around them. The lyrics acknowledge the dislike and frustration that the singer feels towards many aspects of life, yet convey a sense of hope and gratitude towards the few things that bring them joy and meaning. The lines "Hate a lot of things, but I love a few things, and you are one of them" capture this dichotomy of emotions, suggesting that even amidst a sea of negativity and disappointment, there are still people and experiences that make life worth living.
The second verse of the song seems to build on this theme by contrasting the singer's sense of isolation and desolation with the sense of purpose and belonging that comes from being with someone they care about. The line "I've got a sad-hearted needing to belong" suggests that the singer yearns for connection and community, but feels unable to find it in the world around them. However, despite this sense of despair, the chorus asserts that the singer can still find solace and meaning in the presence of the person they love, even if everything else around them is chaotic and confusing.
Overall, Ant Farm is a poignant and evocative song that captures the complexities of human emotion and the struggle to find meaning and purpose amidst the chaos of life.

Hate a lot of things
There are many things that I don't like
But I love a few things
However, there are a few things that I really enjoy
And you are one of them
You happen to be one of those things I truly cherish
Hard to believe
It's kind of unbelievable
After all of these years
Considering the amount of time that has passed
But you are one of them
Still, you remain one of the things I love
Walk down the street
As I stroll along the road
I'm thinking:
I start to ponder
Everybody move along
Everyone seems busy with their lives
I've got a sad-hearted needing
I feel an emotional longing
To belong
To be accepted
Nevertheless
Even so
It's all the mess you made
The turmoil you created
But I can let it go
Despite that, I can move on from it
Walk down the street
Again, as I travel down the road
I'm thinking:
My mind wanders to the thought
Look at all the ants in a farm
Observing the ants in a colony
I've got a sad-hearted feeling
I experience a feeling of sadness
To harm
A desire to cause harm
Hate a lot of things
Once again, there are many things I don't like
But I love a few things
However, there are a few things I truly enjoy
And you are one of them
And you happen to be one of the things I treasure the most
