SAFARI
Rats With Wings Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A motorcycle accident whistling softly through blades of grass

Is my half-mother where she did come to wrest me from the flaming wreck

Another shovel break inside and I try my best to get drunk

So what's the big idea that keeps wine and spirits from entering my brain
The birds of prey fall from the sky swiping fried chicken from my hands

I draw my lunch in close as my brother gestures with a hard boiled egg

A sound from hell the vultures make as they swarm round the still-born

Is my half-mother where she did come to wrest me from the flaming wreck

Overall Meaning

In Rats With Wings's song "Safari", the lyrics paint a vivid picture of a surreal landscape where motorcycle accidents, vultures, and hard boiled eggs all exist in a strange harmony. The first line, "A motorcycle accident whistling softly through blades of grass", sets the tone for the song, immediately conjuring an image of a violent collision in a quiet field. The following line, "Is my half-mother where she did come to wrest me from the flaming wreck", adds to the sense of disorientation and confusion, suggesting that the singer may be in a state of shock and delirium after the accident. The line "Another shovel break inside and I try my best to get drunk" suggests that the singer is trying to drown out the pain and trauma of the accident, but is struggling to do so. The final lines, "A sound from hell the vultures make as they swarm round the still-born / Is my half-mother where she did come to wrest me from the flaming wreck", once again highlight the surreal and dreamlike quality of the song, blurring the boundaries between life and death, and suggesting that the singer may be caught in a liminal space between the two.

Overall, "Safari" is a haunting and evocative song, with lyrics that are open to multiple interpretations. It is possible that the song is a meditation on mortality and the fragility of life, or a reflection on the ways in which our perceptions of reality can be distorted in times of crisis. Alternatively, the song could be a more abstract exploration of themes like addiction, trauma, or mental illness, with the imagery serving as a metaphorical representation of the singer's state of mind. Whatever the intended meaning of the lyrics, they paint a vivid and unsettling picture that lingers long after the song has ended.

The golden days of YouTube: no douchebag influencers, no clout chasers, just people making true original content

I couldn't agree more! All good things end eventually.

@dayviduh

No there were definitely people who dominated the website with vlogs even in 2008

@craigbeaulieu9967

I think it's a little bit of both... The "influencers" weren't there in the douchey sense they are now, but there were there in a sense, making content and videos that had... Effort put into them. We're at a stage now where any idiot with a cellphone and a gimmick (or big boobs) can just selfie a video and make money... Hey science, hurry up with that time machine... PLEASE
