Bio:
After teaching overseas in the Marshall Islands, Chris Cunningham returned to Seattle in 2008 and met Brantley Duke, a local record engineer and musician. Within two months of their introduction, the pair began writing and playing music together. They shared a common interest in darker sounding melodies combined with intricate vocal harmonies.
In the spring of 2009, a talented Seattle drummer by the name of Matt Badger was introduced to Chris at a show. After a 5 minute conversation, Matt was invited to join the project.
The trio spent the summer of ‘09 practicing and writing together, then began recording what would become their first full-length, a 14 track album titled “Demons and Lakes.”
Since the album’s release in January 2010, Ravenna Woods has been enjoying a large amount of local support, consistent airplay on Seattle’s KEXP 90.3, and very favorable press (local and international).
Ravenna Woods was awarded the title of ‘Best Acoustic Indie Band of 2010’ by Seattle Magazine, and got voted into KEXPs top 90 albums of 2010.
Ravenna is currently wrapping up their upcoming effort – “Valley of the Headless Men.”
The sound can best be described as innovative acoustic indie music that weaves together haunting vocal harmonies, complex finger picking, and unconventional percussion into complex song structures.

Everything’s been handed straight to you on a silver spoon.
You’ve got everything that you want, everything that you need, and please –
Don’t take this the wrong way but- I want you to have- I want you to have a terrible life.
Our blood is American soil; our blood is American soil that all your dreams are buried in.
You must be patient, yeah, you best be patient, or you’ll see
Darkness pour right in to come and meet ya. Darkness poured right in…
I woke up, I woke up – at the bottom of a lake…
Your life couldn’t get much brighter; everyone is so nice, so proud, so in love with you.
You’d say that you didn’t ask for this at all and that’s fine, that’s alright,
Don’t take this to heart but still- I want you to have- I want you to have a terrible life.
Darkness poured right in to come and meet me. Darkness poured right in…and
I woke up, I woke up – at the bottom of a lake…
The lyrics of Ravenna Woods's song "Demons and Lakes" is about the envy and bitterness one can feel towards someone who appears to have everything handed to them on a silver platter. The singer is describing this person who seems to have everything they could ever want or need, yet they still wish for them to suffer in some way. They go on to describe how their blood is American soil, which all the dreams of this perfect person are buried in. The singer warns this person to be patient or else darkness will pour in.
Suddenly, the song's perspective shifts, and the singer is now speaking about themselves. They woke up at the bottom of a lake surrounded by spirits and demons to guide their way. It's unclear whether this is a metaphorical or literal experience, but the song seems to suggest that the singer has descended into some kind of darkness, which they attribute to their envy and bitterness towards this other person.
Overall, "Demons and Lakes" is a powerful song about the destructive nature of envy and how it can lead one down a dark path. It highlights the dangerous consequences of putting too much emphasis on material possessions and external success.
