Bio:
After teaching overseas in the Marshall Islands, Chris Cunningham returned to Seattle in 2008 and met Brantley Duke, a local record engineer and musician. Within two months of their introduction, the pair began writing and playing music together. They shared a common interest in darker sounding melodies combined with intricate vocal harmonies.
In the spring of 2009, a talented Seattle drummer by the name of Matt Badger was introduced to Chris at a show. After a 5 minute conversation, Matt was invited to join the project.
The trio spent the summer of ‘09 practicing and writing together, then began recording what would become their first full-length, a 14 track album titled “Demons and Lakes.”
Since the album’s release in January 2010, Ravenna Woods has been enjoying a large amount of local support, consistent airplay on Seattle’s KEXP 90.3, and very favorable press (local and international).
Ravenna Woods was awarded the title of ‘Best Acoustic Indie Band of 2010’ by Seattle Magazine, and got voted into KEXPs top 90 albums of 2010.
Ravenna is currently wrapping up their upcoming effort – “Valley of the Headless Men.”
The sound can best be described as innovative acoustic indie music that weaves together haunting vocal harmonies, complex finger picking, and unconventional percussion into complex song structures.
They Ran

Their bodies floating on the waves – past little sharks…
Wooo-o-wo-o-wo-oo-o-o-o-o-o
We see, we go where the sun and the light shone.
We swam for the shore, where the light still goes, still goes.
We camp on the shore, while the dark starts to knock on our doors.
Lets see whose all in charge so we can meet them, shake their hands and
Play the parts of loyal peasants who would never dream of dissent, write of revolt – alright!
Wooo-o-wo-o-wo-oo-o-o-o-o-o
They ran to the road…they ran to the road…
They ran to the road that led to the coast.
The lyrics to Ravenna Woods's song "They Ran" narrates the story of a group of people stranded on a beach or an island. The lyrics paint a picture of a group that is frightened, uncertain and vulnerable, trapped in an unfamiliar and dangerous environment. The first lines of the song describe the group crawling on their knees in the dark and sand, with the water's edge within reach. Their bodies float on waves, past little sharks. The following lines narrate the group's action of swimming to the shore, where the sun and light shone. However, as night falls, they realize that they are not alone and may have stumbled upon an uncharted territory. They camp on the beach and contemplate who is in charge of the place, wanting to introduce themselves as loyal subjects who have no plans of revolting against any authority that may be present on the island.
Towards the end of the song, the group's fear intensifies, and they decide to run to the road that leads to the coast, perhaps in the hopes of finding a way out or seeking help. The lyrics suggest that the road to the coast is their only escape from their current situation. The song ends with a repetition of "they ran," emphasizing the group's urgency to leave the island and to reach the road to safety.
