Don't let the sun catch you cryin'
Cryin' at my front door
You done daddy dirty
He sure don't want you no more

Don't let the sun catch you lyin'
Lyin' at my front door
Daddy's done turned salty
And baby, you made him so sore

You can cry, cry, cry
Yes baby, you can wail
Beat your head on the pavement
Till the man comes and throws you in jail

Don't let the sun catch you cryin'
Cryin' at my front door
You done your daddy dirty
I tell you, he just don't want you no more

Don't let the sun catch you lyin'
Lyin' at my front door
Daddy's done turned salty
Baby, you made him so sore

Whoa, you know you done me dirty now
And I just don't want you no more

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ray Charles's "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin'" convey the emotions of a father who has been betrayed by his daughter. He warns her not to cry at his front door as she has done him wrong and he is no longer willing to forgive her. The father tells his daughter that she has made him bitter and salty, and his heart cannot take any more pain. He also tells her not to lie to him as he is not willing to accept her deceit any longer.

The father expresses his disappointment and frustration with his daughter's behavior. He implies that she has been dishonest with him and has hurt him in some way. The father advises his daughter to stop crying and wailing and take responsibility for her actions. He also suggests that she has been beaten down by life so much that she is willing to bang her head on the pavement till the man comes to throw her in jail. The father is warning his daughter that her actions have consequences, and she needs to own up to them and face them with courage.

The emotions conveyed in the lyrics of the song are raw and real. The lyrics tell a story about betrayal and disappointment, and the music adds another layer of emotion to the already profound words. "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin'" is a classic Ray Charles song that continues to touch hearts and souls to this day.

Somehow my favorite song to ride my skateboard to. Nothing beats a warm day flipping my board on the streets of New York to this song. Makes me realize how precious life is.

When I was about 9 years old, a friend of my father’s gave him some 45 rpm records. This song was on one of those records, and I believe “Come rain or come shine “ was on the flip side.
This was the first time I heard RayCharles, and even at that age I recognized his genius.
I am 73 now and have been listening to Ray since then and saw him live three times.
I think I might hold the world record for listening the most Ray’s songs the most times! I love that man!
