Negro, afila tu machete
Enyuga tu buey y vete
A trabajar bajo el sol
Ve cantando una canción
Para que no te amedrentes
Al sudor métele el diente
Pa′ que te bendiga Dios
Trabajas de sol a sol
Pa' ganarte la comi′a
Y cuando se acaba el día
Vuelves de nuevo al bohío
Y te duele el cuerpo entero
Por lo mucho que has sufri'o
Y ese callo majadero
Te mantuvo en agonía
Pero tú sigues cantando
La canción del carretero
Que se oye de día a día
Allá por la serranía
Oh, oh
Echa pa'lante, mi buey
Que tenemos que avanzar
Hoy vamo′ a dar veinte viajes
De caña pa′ la central
Echa pa'lante, mi buey
Que tenemos que avanzar
Hoy vamo′ a dar veinte viajes
De caña pa' la central
Oh, oh
Oh, oh
The song "La Zafra" by Richie Ray & Bobby Cruz depicts the realities of the sugar cane harvest in Puerto Rico. The lyrics describe the hard work and struggles of the field workers as they prepare for the harvest season. The opening lines, "Oh, la zafra ya comenzó / Negro, afila tu machete," urge the workers to prepare for the tough days ahead. The lyrics further describe the grueling work from sunup to sundown, and the physical toll that it takes on the body. Despite the hardships, the song encourages the workers to persist and continue with their work, singing a song to fend off any feelings of intimidation.
The lyrics also touch on the economic realities of working in the sugar cane industry. The workers are portrayed as having to work tirelessly to earn their daily sustenance, and the song alludes to the lack of job security as workers are sent to different locations depending on where work is available. The repeated refrain of "Echa el molino a caminar, que hay que moler en la central" (Start up the mill, we have to grind in the mill) highlights the urgency of the harvest season and underscores the importance of the workers' labor.
Overall, "La Zafra" serves as a tribute to the hardworking field laborers who put in immense effort year after year to bring in the sugar cane harvest.

Grandes maestros.
