He was a founding member of Puerto Rican salsa orchestra El Gran Combo as well as latin band Roberto Roena y Su Apollo Sound. Roena was also a member of the Fania All-stars with whom he recorded his signature song 'coro miyare'
In 1970 Roena joined Cameroonian Saxophonist Manu Dibango, a massive step for salsa fusion music.

Un día como hoy, 20 de julio de 1969, se funda el Apollo Sound de Roberto Roena, el Señor Bongó, el cual bautizó a su grupo con ese nombre (aunque la sugerencia del mismo, según algunos, se le atribuyó al fenecido saxofonista Al Abreu) debido a la coincidencia del primer día de ensayo de la agrupación con la llegada de la misión "Apollo 11" a la Luna. ¡Felicitaciones! 🎵🎺🎷🥁🪘🎹🎶🎉🎂🎊😀😀😀😀😀
