Before Queen, Taylor founded Smile with Brian May. Smile released one album in Japan which is now available throughout the world as Ghost of a Smile. Smile wrote a few of the songs which would later appear on Queen's self-titled debut album, and one - Doin' Alright was featured on the Smile album.
Taylor also fronted another band, The Cross from 1987 to 1991. The first album, Shove it (1988) was a solo album by Taylor in all but name - he wrote all the songs and played most of the instruments himself. This was an experiment that didn't really work for Taylor and in the other two albums by The Cross he allowed the other members of the band to contribute more, resulting in more traditionally styled rock albums.
Out of the four original members of Queen Taylor and guitarist Brian May continued to play as Queen + Paul Rodgers between 2004 and 2008. Of the other original members singer Freddie Mercury tragically died in 1991 and bassist John Deacon retired from music business in the mid-1990's.
In 2009, after the partnership between him, Brian and Paul ended, Roger worked on some new solo material from which his single The Unblinking Eye (Everything is Broken) was digitally released at 23th November at Queenonline.com. At the moment it is unclear how the future of Queen will look like, though Roger has announced that he will do a short tour in the spring of 2010.
Loneliness...
Roger Taylor Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And loneliness is hell on earth
They say it's all in the mind
Well I'm sure that's true
But knowing isn't a cure
It don't help me or you
You don't know what it's like
You don't know what it's like
When you're really alone
But then it's all in the mind loneliness?
Loneliness can be so unkind
And loneliness hope you never find it
They say it's all in the mind
See how it falls off the tongue
They say you reap what you sow
They must be putting us on
'Cause you don't know what it's like
'Til you're all on your own
No you don't know what it's like
Until you're alone
Yeah you don't know what it's like
Wait 'til you're really alone
But then it's all in the mind
Loneliness, loneliness, loneliness
The lyrics of Roger Taylor’s song “Loneliness” convey the sense of despair and hopelessness that often comes with being alone. The song describes loneliness as the greatest curse and hell on earth. It acknowledges that loneliness is a state of mind, but knowing that offers little comfort or cure. The repetition of “all in the mind” highlights the frustration and irony of this paradoxical situation.
Taylor’s lyrics continue to underscore the effects of loneliness on one’s psyche. Depicting the experience of being all on one’s own, the lyrics suggest that being alone is a whole different experience to just “being alone.” It is only after experiencing true loneliness that one understands its magnitude. The lyricist believes that loneliness can be unkind, and he hopes that no one else experiences it. However, as the lyrics suggest, life has an ironic way of reaping what we sow. Thus, for some, it may be inevitable.
To sum up, “Loneliness” is an emotionally evocative song that captures the despair and loneliness that many can feel acutely, particularly in today's largely isolated and disconnected world. The song is a powerful commentary on the human condition, expressing the pain and sorrow that often comes with being alone.
