Sisters
Rosemary Clooney (1) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sisters, sisters
There were never such devoted sisters
Never had to have a chaperone, no sir
I'm here to keep my eye on her

Caring, sharing
Every little thing that we are wearing
When a certain gentleman arrives from Rome
She wore the dress and I stayed home

All kinds of weather
We stick together
The same in the rain or sun
Two different faces
But in tight places
We think and we act as one... uh-huh

Those who've seen us
Know that not a thing could come between us
Many men have tried to split us up but no one can

Lord help the mister
Who comes between me and my sister
And lord help the sister who comes between me and my man

Sister

Sister
Sister don't come between me and my man

Overall Meaning

The song "Sisters" by Rosemary Clooney celebrates the special bond between sisters. The lyrics emphasize the loyalty and devotion that sisters have for each other. They never needed a chaperone because they always have each other's backs. They share everything, even their clothes. When a man arrives from Rome, one sister wears the dress and the other stays home. They can handle any kind of weather together and in tight situations, they think and act as one. They have an unbreakable bond that many men have tried to come between but have failed. The song warns that anyone who tries to come between sisters will have to face the consequences.

The song was originally written by Irving Berlin and first appeared in the 1954 film White Christmas, where it was performed by Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen. The song became a hit and has since been covered by many artists, including Bette Midler and Christina Aguilera. The song is often associated with the holiday season because of its appearance in White Christmas.

A classic! What I love most about Betty and Judy is that they DON’T fall into the typical tropes seen with sisters in the media. For instance, Judy knows that Betty is the more talented singer and, instead of being envious, actively encourages her to pursue that career. They also don’t fight over men and genuinely look out for one another throughout the whole movie. Truly, there were never such devoted sisters! ;p

Right! My Sisters took my Name out of my Parents Will. I won and they truly lost. Funny, they thought because our parents passed, that they were Dead? Like Jesus, they live on and they saw what they did or No what they tried to do! Sisters! But I love Betty & Judy! Watch this every year!

My sister Kathie and I had an "act" based on this. We would force all our kids to sit on the floor and watch us sing and dance to this....how lovely to happen across this, and the memory.
