Tenderly
Rosemary Clooney (1) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The evening breeze caressed the trees tenderly
The trembling trees embraced the breeze tenderly
Then you and I came wandering by
And lost in a sigh were we
The shore was kissed by sea and mist tenderly
I can't forget how two hearts met breathlessly
Your arms opened wide and closed me inside
You took my lips, you took my love so tenderly

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Rosemary Clooney's song "Lovely Weather for Ducks" describe a romantic moment between two people who are deeply in love. The first two lines vividly describe the gentle, intimate movements of nature, which serve as a fitting backdrop for the arrival of the lovers. The lyrics then turn to the overwhelming emotions of the two people, who are so caught up in their love that they are "lost in a sigh." The next couple of lines describe the ethereal quality of the environment, with the shore being "kissed" by the sea and mist. Finally, the lyrics turn to the physical intimacy between the two people, with the lover's arms "opening wide" to embrace the other and the two people engaging in a tender kiss.

This was my parents' wedding dance in 1952. So sweet and romantic.

Her voice was so pure!

She makes singing seem so easy. It's not! What a voice. The orchestra and arrangement are also wonderful--something we rarely hear nowadays.

On July 12, 1949 I was born. Today is my 60th birthday. My Mother told me that this was my parents "love song". Nobody sang it better than Rosemary Clooney. I am proud to know that in the beginning, this is how they felt about one another. I am comforted by this beautiful song and the knowledge that I was conceived so tenderly. Thank you for posting this song!!

Happy birthday! I just happened to look this song up out of the blue, and yours was the top comment 🥰

I actually came across this song almost a decade ago because Meryl Streep said she remembered her mother playing this song when she was a child. Such a random reference but such a lovely song that has stuck with me since I was 13

Huge Rosemary Clooney fan. She did this tune so much justice. Just the right lush arrangement it needed.

The live Chubby Jackson version is fun but Rosemary knocks it out of the park as usual. Glad to see this version get nearly a million views!

I had heard more recent versions of this song, but this one, for me tops all. Beautiful really with tender lyrics, and sung with so much feeling by this excellent singer.

I recommend the instrumental versions by Art Tatum and Bill Evans, but this is my favourite by a singer.
