Pretty Paper
Roy Orbison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The pretty paper, pretty ribbons of blue

Pretty paper, pretty ribbons of blue
Wrap your presents to your darling from you
Pretty pencils to write "I love you"
Pretty paper, pretty ribbons of blue

Crowded street, busy feet hustle by him
Downtown shoppers, Christmas is nigh
There he sits all alone on the sidewalk
Hoping that you won't pass him by

Should you stop, better not, much too busy
You're in a hurry, my how time does fly
In the distance the ringing of laughter
And in the midst of the laughter he cries

Pretty paper, pretty ribbons of blue
Wrap your presents to your darling from you

Pretty pencils to write "I love you"
Pretty paper, pretty ribbons of blue

Overall Meaning

Roy Orbison's 'Pretty Paper' is a melancholic song about an old man living on the street. He is trying to sell pretty paper, and he watches as busy people rushed by him without a glance. The lyrics begin by talking about the paper and ribbons that people use to wrap gifts for their loved ones but quickly turn to the old man who is reduced to selling the same items just to survive. The song sets the scene during the holidays in a crowded street in the city. The man is entirely out of place among the busy shoppers and their lavish decoration. The choruses repeat the line "pretty paper and ribbons of blue," emphasizing the stark contrast between the materialistic and commercial aspect of the season and the harsh reality of those left behind. The verses, on the other hand, tell the story of this man who is so hopeless he is crying amidst the laughter and noise.

The lyricist uses a particular literary device in this song called an "irony," where the listener contrasts the exquisite paper and ribbons with the sad and ironic fate of the old man. He is selling these items because he desperately needs to survive, not because he is excited about the holiday decorations. The imagery in the first verse of the song is in sharp contrast with the situation in which the old man finds himself. The hustle and bustle of the city, the wrapping paper and ribbons, and the pretty pencils used to write love notes all contrast with the sadder scenes of an old man alone on the sidewalk selling pretty paper.

To help set the emotional tone, a bit of sadness, and to emphasize irony, the chorus and verses' melodies are relatively calm, melodious, and measured, conveying the tranquillity and sadness of the old man's situation.

A song that carries the message of Christmas does it not.

My dad loved this song. He often told me to slow down and take the time. I think we can all learn form the lyrics. My dad is gone, but I hope he knows I cry each time I hear this song and think of the lesson he tried so hard to teach me. Happy New Year to all. Peace.

Beautiful words and memories you have posted with thoughts of your Dad.
I too was very close to my Papa and miss him terribly. I think of him each and every day. He passed in 2002 and it seems like yesterday.
Tomorrow is my wee pooch Pedro's 5th Birthday and I'm putting up a post on IG with this song to celebrate. A favourite song of mine too.
Greetings from Brisbane, Australia. ❤🇦🇺

Yes, my dad joined us by the tree and played this song. He said, yes, it was so very sad, but memorable and moving. "Be glad for what we have. Now unwrap your presents in all their pretty blue ribbons." How very much I miss you and Ma, those precious family times. Now, this Christmas, alone, I won't even try to blink back the tears.

My dad’s the reason I love Roy Orbison. He’s also no longer here and it took me a couple years to be able to listen to him or Marty Robbins again but now I’m glad I have the memories of going for drives in the country with him and listening to Roy and Marty

My father would walk around during Christmas time in the house. During the 70s, 80s and 90s singing this song and out of me and my 5 brothers and sisters, I am the only one that remembers him doing that. I've always loved the song. One of my favorite Christmas songs. Willie Nelson knows how to write a song.

@dohm1lm

Latecomer to the party. July 10, 2023 and am hearing Roy’s version for the first time. I was born in the wrong era!
