Dance With You
Ryan Star Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
My legs, my feet, my face is so sore.
I have been loving you so long;
I have been loving you so wrong.
I hold onto you as you hold onto me;
I'm afraid to come.
I wait there for you as you wait here for me;
I will not dance with you no more.
My lips, my face, my dick is so sore.
Tell me who you'd rather be;
The fool in you, the king in me.
I hold onto you as you hold onto me;
I'm afraid to come.
As I wait there for you, you wait here for me;
I'm afarid to come.
Here, in my room, on the floor,
With the blade in your hand,
I see you bleed.
You always bleed.
These numbered days
Are on your skin.
I hold onto you, as you hold onto me;
I'm afraid to come.
The lyrics of Ryan Star's song "Dance With You" depict the desperation of a dysfunctional relationship. The singer is exhausted from trying to please his partner but ends up hurting himself in the process. His reluctance to "dance" with his partner anymore is a metaphor for the end of their co-dependent cycle. He recognizes that he has been loving his partner wrongly and for too long. The lines "My legs, my feet, my face is so sore" and "My lips, my face, my dick is so sore" show the physical toll of trying to keep up with an unhealthy dynamic.
The chorus lines, "I hold onto you as you hold onto me; I'm afraid to come" indicate the fear of letting go, even though it's clear that the relationship is causing more harm than good. The lines "Here, in my room, on the floor, With the blade in your hand, I see you bleed/You always bleed" suggest that there might be self-harm involved, either on the part of the singer or his partner. The final lines "These numbered days Are on your skin" hint at the fragility of life and how it's passing them by while they're stuck in an unhealthy cycle.
Overall, "Dance With You" is a song that speaks to anyone who has been in a relationship that was more harmful than helpful. The lyrics speak to how easy it is to get caught up in patterns that ultimately do not serve us, and that sometimes the bravest thing we can do is to let go and move on.
