Hi Robert... Many thanks for your no-nonsense style: Much appreciated.
Been a manual box guy all my driving days (50 years & counting) but have had to move to an auto box. (As my wife has back & Leg problems.)
So, I now have a Volvo Xc90 V8.(2009) ...and I am loving it....super vehicle.
Had a rad problem a week or so ago & installed a new rad: In doing so, I lost some 'oil' from the lines: The "oil" was that black I thought it had an engine oil cooler!
There is no towing hitch on the car and as far as I can ascertain: It has been dealer maintained all its life (160,000kms = 100,000 miles) so it would appear to me that the previous owner was paying through the nose...Mmm? The ATF should not be in that state, I'm sure.
So, a flush & change is urgently required.
Handbook states the Fluid is to Volvo Spec JJ3309, capacity 7 litres.....How much am I looking to buy for a flush....14 litres? Seems rather "overkill" to me....
BTW: Of the two lines: Which is the return? I imagine the lower hose?
Again. Thanks for your experience in all these things "Volvo"....!!

Hi Robert,
> I have a V70 with an orange arrow light blinking.
> It does blink seldom, nevertheless it is something
> that put the transmission into a protection mode.
>
> The car has been serviced by an old school Volvo
> mechanic with limited electronic skill for 5 years.
> He was good with previous models such as the 740,
> Nevertheless he has flushed the transmission with compressed air and all problems started since then.
>
> I have run for approximately 2500 kms in September
> last year and the transmission was running well;
> When we reach Onslow, a small country town up north in Western Australia with an outside temperature of 46 Celsius degree, than the transmission was starting to shift irregularly.
>
> In the middle of the desert there were not many changes to find an expert in Volvo gearbox , therefore we have decided to turn around to Perth,
> Which was 2500 km away.
>
> During the long journey, we stopped and let the oil cooling down when the blinking light come up or
> when the automatic transmission was not
> shifting properly.
>
> The Volvo in Perth has replaced the speed sensor after they have diagnosed a fault with the computer.
>
> After the replacement of the sensor and the cable,
> the shifting problem has improved, nevertheless after 3 hours of good run, the problem had appeared again. The car has been parked from October 2019 until August 2020 as I have left Australia to Europe to look after my old mother back in Italy.
>
> The car has been taken again to Volvo recently and the diagnostic fault was a suspected TCM fault (transmission control module), please see attached report).
>
> Now the TCM is not available at Volvo Australia,
> I have found a second hand one in Moscow and
> I have few questions for you Robert:
>
> 1. Do you think that the TCM is really the problem?
> And if yes, do you suggest me to purchase a new
> card instead? My v70 has 390.000 kms and 22
> years. The hot and harsh environment in Onslow
> could has caused a fault in the electronic card?
> 2. Do you suggest me to flush properly the
> transmission circuit and the torque converter
> with a professional hydraulic machine such as the
> one in the picture attached?
>
> It seems that the transmission is running mechanically well since the 24 of August. No shifting, nevertheless the warning orange arrow light is blinking irregularly, sometimes during the first 3-4 minutes in the morning sometimes just during the last 20 minutes of run on my way back home in the evening.
>
> The 2nd hand TCM will arrive in Perth in 1-2 weeks and must be re-programmed by Volvo. Do you suggest to purchase a new card and flush both circuit together or you reckon the transmission must be replaced completely?
>
> I have done 4-5 videos where the transmission is shifting very well on the highway as well as at the traffic lights, it seems is just an electronic fault, nevertheless the automatic gear box is a very important part of my v70, therefore I am looking the best advice from an experienced mechanic as you.
>
> Let me know if I can share my video on YouTube with you if you prefer have a look at my car running on the highway.
>
> Best regards Alex

Robert I just bought my first Volvo a few weeks ago. I have watched many of your videos and just wanted to say they are great for Volvo enthusiasts and to say thank you.

Thanks for watching.

This is a great video Robert! I appreciate the strictly informational videos, I’m currently servicing my 1996 960 transmission that’s automatic with a filter change and partial fluid change to not shock it. I super appreciate this!

thanks for watching.

Hi Robert, first of all, thank you very much for your videos, they are really great and have been very helpful for me. I live in Sweden and have a 1998 v70 AWD. It used to be a police car the first 6 or 7 years and I have had this car for 5 years now. The transmission oil is brown like in your 850 example. It has 211k miles on it and according to the service history that I have on the car it seems that the ATF fluid has never been replaced. I consulted a few mechanics on this and they adviced agains changing the AFT fluid if it has never been changed as changing it at this point could result in that the gearbox will slip and will not engage gears correctly. What is your opinion on this? Many thanks and all best.

Robert DIY

Did you watch the video?

Hi Robert great video very informative as usual. I have a 1996 T5 Turbo with an auto transmission, that has been stood for most of 7-years with an ocassional start up & run round the block. I recently got it back on the road with the aim of it replacing my NA 850 manual, which is in need of some work. The transmission warning arrow came on as soon as I got it up to about 60. If I stop overnight and run it again the light goes out until I reach about 60 again. I have taken it to an auto transmission specialist & they tell me that it is "flaring" ( ithink that means slipping) between gear changes from 2nd to 3rd & 3rd to 4th. They tell me it could be number 1 shift solenoid or it could need a complete transmission overhaul. Have you had any experience of this problem & do you have any opinion on what the most likely cause is please I don't want to spend money on solenoid changes only to find it is the gearbox is shot. It drives really well with nice smooth changes up or down. cheers.

Thanks Robert I had watched your videos on doing that swap. It is a nice idea. But in this case my other 850 is too good to canabalise. If I was going to do it I would need to get a donor car to strip out all the other bits. I might even think about that too.

Robert DIY

No. My suggestion would be to strip your old car of it's manual transmission parts and install it on the T5. It's the best thing I have ever done to my 850 T5.
