Pibbles-a-Plenty

This one is new to me. Barber's music always has a twist of something in it, like an exotic drink. I either wince or savor what I'm hearing, there's just no letting it glide by. This is a show piece for organist and orchestra, a great introduction to 20th century music appreciation, in my opinion. Some day it will be ancient music, beloved and ignored, but still a gem forever.

For those who are not acquainted with the music of Barber apart from his famous Adagio i suggest you try his violin concerto. It's a gem!

Paul Lewis

Barber’s violin concerto is wonderful, has to be in my top 5 favourites 😊

Stephen Golden

They are playing Barber in Frankfurt, and brilliantly. Grateful. The organist is glorious.

The pedal cadenza is something else. Ms. Apkalna deserves some sort of award for most creative use of chunky heels in an organ performance! Check out the heel-toe double stops around the middle of it. By the way, the cadenza was evidently the result of Barber's collaboration with organist-conductor Thomas Schippers. Bravo!

@Kent Jones i stand corrected.
For many years i had the CBS recording with E Power Biggs/ Ormandy. If im not mistaken it was coupled with the Poulenc Organ Concerto.

@Clive .L I had an old Columbia LP with a performance of this piece, always one of my favorite organ works. I think it was performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra, with E. Power Biggs. The concert notes relayed the composer's collaborative credit to Thomas Schippers for the cadenza.

I always thought he collaborated with the great organist E Power Biggs.

Claudio Lehmann

Very exciting piece by Barber by several instruments including organ, briliantly performed by Iveta Apkalna

Fascinating and dramatic--a Toccata Festiva for sure. By the way at around 15:00 I witnessed the fastest page turn in history by the organist. Bravo!
