Nginig
Sandwich Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everybody told me gem stuff's dangerous
I guess I didn't believe it
Until Dad always seem apprehensive
And now he's really freaking out
What do I do?
I don't want that for you

Everybody tells me life is precious
On the planet earth
And that means you
And I have to protect you
What if somehow you get hurt
What do I do?
I don't want that for you

Oooooooooh
Oooooooooh
Oooooooooh
Oooooooooh

What am I going to tell you?
You're better off not knowing
The trouble I'm in
I don't want you to worry
About what've I just seen
About where've I just been
You don't have to be a part of this
I don't think I want you to be
You don't need this
You don't need me

Oooooooooh
Oooooooooh

Oooooooooh
Oooooooooh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sandwich's song Nginig reflects the internal conflict the singer experiences between wanting to protect someone they love and wanting to shield them from the dangers of the outside world. The first verse describes the singer's hesitation to believe the warnings about the dangers of "gem stuff," which is likely a reference to the magical powers possessed by the characters in the television show, "Steven Universe." The singer acknowledges that their father expressed caution, which has caused the singer to become anxious over the safety of their loved one.

The second verse continues this theme of protecting what is precious. The singer acknowledges that life is precious and that they must protect their loved one from harm. Fearful of what might happen, the singer wonders what they would do if their loved one ever got hurt. The repetition of the line "What do I do?" highlights the singer's anxiety and insecurity about how to protect their loved one from danger.

The chorus, consisting of four lines of "Ooooooh," adds emotional weight to the lyrics, heightening the sense of urgency and vulnerability the singer is experiencing. In the final verse, the singer admits that they are in trouble and that they don't want their loved one to worry for them. The singer wishes to spare their loved one the burden of knowing about their struggles and doesn't want them to be a part of it. This stanza represents the song's climax, where the singer's internal conflict comes to a head, and the singer realizes the need to protect their loved one by keeping them away from danger.
