The Sea
Sandy Denny Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do I ever wonder? You don't know.
You'll never follow, and I'll never show.
D'you see the water and watch it flow
And float an empty shell,
And you think that I'm hiding from the island.
You've a fault in your senses. Can you feel it now?

Time? What is that? I've no time to care.
I've lived for a long while nearly everywhere.
You will be taken, everyone, you ladies and you gentlemen.
Fall and listen with your ears upon the paving stone.
Is that what you hear? The coming of the sea?

Sea flows under your doors in London town.
And all your defences are all broken down.
You laugh at me on funny days, but mine's the slight of hand.

Don't you know I am a joker, a deceiver?
And I'm waiting for the land.

Overall Meaning

In Sandy Denny's The Sea, the lyrics are full of puzzling elements that evoke a sense of vague symbolism. At the beginning of the song, Denny's lyrics suggest that there's some inaccessible part of her personality that is unknown and will remain that way forever. The second line suggests that the listener does not have the ability to understand her, and she is not obligated to explain herself. The third line paints a picture of someone sitting by the sea, watching the water flow and making observations. Then the chorus arrives with imagery of an abandoned shell floating in the water, suggesting that Denny feels similarly aimless.

The second verse then begins with a notably philosophical approach to thinking about time. Denny doesn't have time for time because she has existed for so long in so many different places. She remarks that everyone will someday die and be subject to the whims of the ocean. At this point, her narration shifts to the listener, telling them to listen closely to the world around them, suggesting that there might be some kind of wisdom in the sounds of the sea. Throughout the song, she has put forth this metaphor of the sea as some kind of ineffable, larger-than-life force that might be guiding her or pointing to something important.

It doesn't matter how many decades pass, Sandy transcends time and space. Listening to her is a kind of therapy. Some days, only her voice will do.

Every time I listen at Sandy I weep. Is it normal?

@tortugabob

I used to see those Fairport Convention, Fotheringay and Strawbs vinyl albums when I was a teenager. Never paid 'em much mind. I was too busy listening to Hendrix, the Stones, Cream, Doors, Beatles etc etc. Sometimes around 1970 I discovered Joni Mitchell and fell in love her music. Way too late in life I heard Sandy Denny on Youtube. I was speechless. She could bring tears to my eyes. Every time I hear this song it chokes me up. I don't know why but Sandy's voice has the ability to make me realize that I am mortal and one day my life will end. Emotional stuff.

My tastes were much the same as yours, but while hitching across Europe in 71 I met an English guy who told me casually I might like Fairport Convention. Back home I got an album and it turns out Sandy was their vocalist. It changed my whole musical life. Thank you Bob Lentell wherever you are.
