Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sarah Brightman's "Pie Jesu" are a prayer asking Jesus for mercy and forgiveness for the sins of the world. The repeated phrase "Pie Jesu" translates to "Merciful Jesus" in Latin, and the following line "Qui tollis peccata mundi" means "who takes away the sins of the world." The singers then ask for eternal rest for the deceased, with "Dona eis requiem" translating to "Grant them rest." The choir joins in to sing "Agnus Dei," meaning "Lamb of God," before returning to the plea for eternal rest. The song ends with the repeated phrase "Sempiternam," or "forever," emphasizing the eternal nature of the mercy and rest being asked for.

I looked this up because of Malaki's performance as well. It makes me cry everytime I hear it but I cant stop listening. I imagine this is the "muzak" of Heaven.

I certainly am. I remember it well when it was first released. It's an absolutely exquisite performance and setting of this sacred text. It still brings tears to my eyes. I also remember first hearing it to the soundtrack from where the images of this video come: a film called Hope & Glory.
