Better Than Ice Cream
Sarah McLachlan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Better than anything else that I've tried
And your love is better than ice cream
Everyone here know how to fight
And it's a long way down
It's a long way down
It's a long way down to the place
Your love is better than chocolate
Better than anything else that I've tried
Oh, love is better than chocolate
Everyone here knows how to cry
It's a long way down
It's a long way down
It's a long way down to the place
Where we started from
The lyrics of Sarah McLachlan's Better Than Ice Cream reveals that love is the ultimate satisfaction in life that surpasses any temporal pleasures like ice cream and chocolate. The singer expresses how her lover's love is so intense and overwhelming that it supersedes anything she has ever experienced. The first line "Your love is better than ice cream, Better than anything else that I've tried," articulates the powerful and all-encompassing nature of her lover's love which can't be compared to anything else. She further emphasizes this point by using the same phrase in the chorus, "And your love is better than ice cream," to reaffirm that her lover's love is the best thing to have ever happened to her.
The singer further describes how love is not just about the good moments, but also the tough and challenging times. She says, "Everyone here knows how to fight and cry," acknowledging that love entails both happiness and sadness, and that they both play a significant role in the experience of love. In the last lines of the chorus, the singer says, "It's a long way down to the place where we started from," meaning that the journey of love is often full of ups and downs. The singer concludes the song by reiterating that love is the ultimate satisfaction in life that outshines all worldly pleasures.

I think Sarah is the perfect woman. Not only is she bright, articulate, and gifted; but she is even physically beautiful. This song is humorous, but you can feel the depth of the love that went into composing it. A true gem! Rock on, Sarah.

Saw her do this many many years ago at Lilleth Fair and just loved it. It's so unusual - a kind of child's song with an adult emotion
