Rainbow Collection
Sarah McLachlan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide
So we've been told, and some choose to believe it
I know they're wrong, wait and see
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers, and me

Who said that every wish would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that, and someone believed it
And look what it's done so far
What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers, and me

All of us under its spell
We know that it's probably magic

Have you been half asleep, and have you heard voices?
Yes, I've heard them calling my name
Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same
I've heard it too many times to ignore it
It's something that I'm supposed to be
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers, and me

Overall Meaning

Sarah McLachlan's "Rainbow Collection" is a song that contemplates the meaning behind rainbows and their connection to human nature. The opening lyrics question the abundance of songs written about rainbows and ask what might be on the other side of these mystical bridges. However, the song's narrator tells us that rainbows are nothing more than illusions, and their colors can easily be explained by the laws of physics. But the singer stops short of completely dismissing the power of the rainbow, stating that they have "nothing to hide." This is where the song's central theme becomes clear. The rainbow represents a sense of hope and optimism that allows us to look beyond what we can see and toward the possibilities that could exist.

The next verse takes this theme even further. The singer points out that many people believe that every wish made upon a star will come true, but she points out the importance of belief as well. The idea that something isn't real until we believe in it is a common thread in many stories and religions, and this song plays on that theme. The singer asks what keeps us "stargazing," believing in something that might not exist, and what we might hope to find by doing so. The chorus repeats the idea that "someday we'll find it," and that this connection will bring together "the lovers, the dreamers, and me." The final verse brings everything full circle, with the singer acknowledging that she has heard a calling that she cannot ignore. Could this be the same "sweet sound" that calls young sailors to their destiny? The song leaves it to us to decide.

My version:

If you would change your mind and give us one reason,
You'll have some new luck to choose.
Before we'll get it out as we start to travel,
We should paint a picture of you.
And now you are not feeling so much older,
It seems like we found our good child.
Now it's fun to check out the rainbow connection,
Inside our new morning to see.

So we should concentrate on most of our homework,
But once it was made to come.
There was a sign to get when it was this order,
You might not feel very strange.
It would make these days come through from a channel,
And you can't stop all our new plans.
Then it was meant to be the rainbow connection,
We'll spread our wings and fly down from the tree.

You will not hang from our time,
Unless you were welcome to know us.

Our thoughts will look so wild upon this old holiday,
Without all those things to remove.
Now you would lie down and come from the decade,
Because you can't stand back our chance.
You are not allowed to make a great story,
And that is how you can solve this day.
When we would come from the rainbow connection,
You will not survive in the sea.

I’m 62 years old and this cover always brings tears to my eyes because it makes me think about all the dogs I’ve had and lost over the decades. I love them all dearly and miss every one of them.

Rock Drummer

I have lost many dogs over the years. Sometimes, the grief makes me wonder if having a dog is worth it. But, the time between when we bring them home and they cross the Rainbow Bridge does make it all worthwhile. I will have no regrets, as my dogs have had spectacular lives. I have a 13 year old at present. I know her time is getting short, but, I am hoping for another 4-5 years. Love her so much. This is such a beautiful song.........so sad that it has been adopted by the gay community. That somehow taints it.
