I'm not frightened anymore
It's my heart that pounds beneath my flesh
It's my mouth that pushes out this breath
And if I shed a tear, I won't cage it
I won't fear love
And if I feel a rage, I won't deny it
Companion to our demons
They will dance and we will play
With chairs, candles, and cloth
Making darkness in the day
It will be easy to look in or out
Upstream or down without a thought
And if I shed a tear, I won't cage it
I won't fear love
And if I feel a rage, I won't deny it
I won't fear love
Peace in the struggle
To find peace
Comfort on the way
To comfort
And if I shed a tear, I won't cage it
I won't fear love
And if I feel a rage, I won't deny it
I won't fear love
I won't fear love
I won't fear love
And if I shed a tear, I won't cage it
I won't fear love
And if I feel a rage, I won't deny it
I won't fear love
I won't fear love
I won't fear love
And if I shed a tear, I won't cage it
I won't fear love
The verses of "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" by Sarah McLachlan reveal a sense of self-acceptance and embracing one's emotions, whether it is a tear or rage. The first verse contains a powerful message about letting go of one's fears and turning towards strength, as the singer notes that their fear has left them and they are no longer frightened. The singer then acknowledges their heartbeat and breath, the physical sensation of being alive, and how they are not afraid to express themselves.
In the second verse, the singer refers to their "companion to our demons," which is the act of coming to terms with and facing one's inner struggles. The singer accepts the pain and darkness that life can bring by symbolizing it with "chairs, candles, and cloth / Making darkness in the day." They reveal that it is easy to go one way or another without much thought - this can be read in both a positive and negative light. On one side, it's powerful to follow instinct and intuition without letting fear control us. But on the other side, it's also easy to lose oneself in the madness of life.
The chorus, repeated multiple times throughout the song, reinforces the singer's decision to accept their emotions and not be afraid of love, heartbreak, or anger. It seems to suggest that peace and comfort come through accepting and acknowledging our emotions, rather than denying them or trying to put them in a cage. It is a beautiful message of self-love, self-acceptance, and emotional freedom.
