Only You Can Say
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How many nights must I spend crying?
How many tears am I to pay?
And how many dreams must keep on dying?
Only you can say

When is the heartache ever mended?
When does the hurting go away?
And when is the longing for you ended?
Only you can say

Must I be chained forever to your memory?
You keep saying never
Is there no hope for me?

Who'll take the love I have for giving?
Who's open arms will bid me, "Stay"?
Oh, when will I feel again like living?
Only you can say

Must I be chained forever to your memory?
You keep saying nеver
Is there no hopе for me?

Who'll take the love I have for giving?
Who's open arms will bid me, "Stay"?
Oh, when will I feel again like living?
Only you can say

Only you can say

Overall Meaning

In Sarah Vaughan's song "Only You Can Say," the lyrics delve into themes of heartache, longing, and the search for closure. The singer is contemplating the depth of her pain and questioning how much longer she must endure this emotional turmoil. She wonders how many nights she will spend crying, how many tears she must shed, and how many dreams will be shattered before finding solace. The repeated line "only you can say" emphasizes her desperation for answers and resolution.

The lyrics also touch on the process of healing and moving on from a broken heart. The singer wonders when the heartache will be mended, when the hurting will subside, and when the longing for the person she loves will finally end. She highlights the intensity of her attachment to this person by expressing her willingness to be "chained forever to [their] memory." However, she questions whether there is any hope for her, as the person keeps saying "never" in response to her desires for a renewed connection.

Amidst the pain and uncertainty, the singer searches for someone who will accept and reciprocate her love. She asks who will take the love she has to offer and welcome her with open arms, urging them to bid her to stay. She yearns for the return of vibrant emotions, hoping to feel alive and whole again. However, all these questions and doubts ultimately rest on the person she longs for; only they can provide the answers, closure, and hope she seeks.

Overall, "Only You Can Say" showcases the universal and timeless experience of longing for love, grappling with heartbreak, and seeking resolution. Sarah Vaughan's emotive vocals deliver the song's poignant message with depth and sincerity.

The very thought of you makes my heart sing
Like an April breeze on the wings of spring,
And you appear in all your splendor,
My one and only love.

The shadows fall and spread their mystic charms
In the hush of night while you're in my arms.
I feel your lips, so warm and tender,
My one and only love.

The touch of your hand is like heaven,
A heaven that I've never known.
The blush on your cheek whenever I speak
Tells me that you are my own.

You fill my eager heart with such desire.
Ev'ry kiss you give sets my soul on fire.
I give myself in sweet surrender,
My one and only love.

What a voice, gets me chills all over my body

Sarah Vaughan had the most divine voice. I love her recordings with Billy Eckstine - Passing Strangers!

There is a version of this song by Johnny Hartman, with John Coltrane, that is soooo moving. Hartman has one of the best baritone voices ever, and is so smooth. If you can find it you are in for a treat. Hartman doesn't come in until about 2 minutes in, but is preceded by some very sweet saxophone by Coltrane. A masterpiece.

I yhink the best version is still by Johnny Mathis , only my opinion ...

coltrane is nice...but,a great female voice is so expansive and telling

Yes, love that version and Johnny Hartman.

You are sooooo right! I just heard it for the first time recently and was FLOORED! Billy Eckstein and a few others come close but Johnny Hartman has the most BEAUTIFUL baritone voice on that number I've EVER heard. His phrasing put me in the mind of a male version of Sarah V, which is why I even came here to listen to her version of that song....but his in my opinion is my FAV

James Harold Brodie

Definitely. Johnny Hartman and John Coltrane. That 2 minutes intro by Coltrane.

The Coltrane/Hartman version is my favorite recording or all time. However, what a great performance by Sarah Vaughan here. Her vocalizations are lilting and sweet. I love it.

It's almost impossible for me to love a woman vocalist's version of any tune as much as I love an Ella Fitzgerald version, but Sarah Vaughan in general, and this tune in particular, may be the exception.
