You're Not The Kind
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're not the kind of a boy for a girl like me
I'm just a song and a dance, you're a symphony
I thought that you never would doubt me
Well, I'm tellin' you, you'd be much better off without me
You're just the kind of a boy who would always play fair
I'm just the kind of a girl who would never be fair
It's so hard to let you go but it's only because I know
That you're not the kind of a boy for a girl like me

You're not the kind of a boy for a girl like me
I'm just a song and a dance, you're a symphony
I thought that you never would doubt me
Well, I'm tellin' you, you'd be much better off without me
You're just the kind of a boy who would always play fair
I'm just the kind of a girl who would never be square
It's so hard to let you go but it's only because I know
That you're not the kind of a boy

You're not the kind of a boy
You're not the kind of a boy for a girl like me

Overall Meaning

In Sarah Vaughan's "You're Not the Kind," the singer is addressing a boy and telling him that they are not a good match. She believes that he is too good for her and that they are on completely different levels, with him being a "symphony" and her being a mere "song and a dance." The singer is aware of her shortcomings and believes that it's best for the boy to be without her, as he deserves someone better. Additionally, she acknowledges that he is a fair and honest person, while she is not always the same way. Despite finding it difficult to let go, the singer ultimately decides that the boy is not the right one for her.

The song speaks to themes of self-awareness, self-doubt and knowing one's own limitations in a relationship. The singer recognizes the incompatibility and understands that their differences will eventually lead to a clash. Furthermore, the song represents the idea that sometimes we must let go of someone we care about in order for them to pursue a better future, even if that means they'll be moving on without us.

One of the greatest things I have ever heard...Sarah Vaugh is my favorite female vocalist and Clifford Brown was amazing and taken from us too soon. We need more of this music to cleanse us from the awful stuff released by "artists" now. God Bless Sarah and Clifford.

just Heaven...I cant even describe how good she makes me feel. About two weeks ago, my ritual of coming home from work, and turning on the news, STOPPED...COLD. And I made up my mind, the only thing I wanted to hear as I wound down, showered and prepared my dinner...was Sarah's voice. To Hell with negative news that never changes. Gimme Sassy.

I love this music.... Ella, Sarah, Doris, Billie, and many many others whose names escape me right now..... this music reminds me when the culture was "cool and collected, men were dapper and women were dames, and everyone seemed to have an appreciation for REAL MUSIC!!! I have always felt that I was born into the wrong generation, but I also believe that God has placed me here for this time for a reason!!!!
