Boy
Scissorkiss Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Drug the boy up to delight
Push the boy up to his edge
And tell him that it's alright
Tell me it's alright
Tell me it's alright
Tell me it's alright
Let the boy breathe through a straw
Crank the boy another night
And let him kiss another boy
And tell him that it's alright
It will never be alright
It will never be alright
It will never be alright
So keep me warm tonight
If I live a lie
I will never be alright
If I live this lie
It will never be alright
The song "Boy" by Scissorkiss is a hauntingly dark and poetic exploration of gender identity, sexuality, and societal pressure. The lyrics start off with the harrowing lines "Dress the boy up as a girl, Drug the boy up to delight, Push the boy up to his edge, And tell him that it's alright." These lyrics seem to describe a situation in which someone is forced to play a gender role that does not align with their true identity, and is urged to go to extremes to conform. The following lines, "Tell me it's alright, And tuck me in at night" suggest a desire for comfort and reassurance in the face of this pressure.
The chorus of the song features the repetition of the phrase "It will never be alright", emphasizing the feelings of despair that can come from feeling trapped in a false identity. The lines "Let the boy breathe through a straw, Crank the boy another night, And let him kiss another boy, And tell him that it's alright" could be interpreted as the singer trying to find ways to express their true self within the confines of societal expectations. However, the final lines of the song "If I live a lie, I will never be alright, If I live this lie, It will never be alright" convey a sense of hopelessness and resignation to a fate where true happiness seems impossible.
Overall, "Boy" is a powerful and poignant exploration of the struggle many people face in reconciling their identity with societal expectations. The lyrics are deeply introspective and speak to the internal turmoil that can come from living a lie. The music and vocals add to the weight and emotional impact of the song, creating a haunting atmosphere that lingers long after the final notes have faded.
