Derided by critics early in his career, Weiland was known for his flamboyant and chaotic onstage persona; he was also known for constantly changing his appearance and vocal style, for his use of a megaphone in concerts for vocal effect, and for his battles with substance abuse. Now widely viewed as a talented and versatile vocalist, Weiland has been ranked in the Top 100 Heavy Metal Vocalists by Hit Parader (No. 57).
In 2012, Weiland formed the backing band The Wildabouts. The band received mixed reviews, and some critics and fans noted Weiland's failing health. In December 2015, Weiland died of an accidental drug overdose on his tour bus in Minnesota at the age of 48. Upon his death, many critics and peers offered re-evaluations of Weiland's life and career; those critics included David Fricke of Rolling Stone and Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins, who identified Weiland as one of the "voices of the generation" alongside Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley.

Crash
Scott Weiland Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It must be a metaphor for losing my mind
Moving slow but way out of control
I'm standing amongst you all and nobody's listening
So hold on to something still
Hold on to something still, hold on, hold on
It's sort of like wedding bells that clamor in silence
Moving slow but way out of control
We grew with the speed of light but crashed in the night
So hold on to something still
Hold on to something still, hold on, hold on
So do you listen to the system in your ear?
Sounds like a whisper, can you picture anything?
We grew with the speed of light but crashed in the night
So hold on to something still
Hold on to something still, hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on
The lyrics of Scott Weiland's "Crash" depict the struggle to control a rocket ship hurtling uncontrollably through life. The metaphorical language likens the situation to losing one's mind. The opening line of "Your car passed my street today but no one was driving" introduces an eerie and unsettling mood. The singer has lost control and those missing wheels represent his own lack of control. He finds himself "moving slow but way out of control" within a crowd that fails to hear his pleas for help.
The chorus of the song, "hold on to something still" implores the listener to find stability amidst the chaos of life. It highlights the desire to fight the uphill battle of addiction, looming insanity, or the inevitable descent into death. The rocket ship represents a fast-paced life that speeds ahead without intention or purpose, leading to a crash in the end. The lyrics continue to ask the listener if they listen to the system in their ear and if they can picture anything beyond the unrelenting noise of society.
The song captures the feeling of despair and hopelessness that comes with the inability to control one's life. The lyrics tell a story of the struggle to control oneself in the face of life's challenges. Overall, the song can be seen as a metaphor for the chaos of life and the importance of holding onto something still, to remain grounded in the face of adversity.
