Derided by critics early in his career, Weiland was known for his flamboyant and chaotic onstage persona; he was also known for constantly changing his appearance and vocal style, for his use of a megaphone in concerts for vocal effect, and for his battles with substance abuse. Now widely viewed as a talented and versatile vocalist, Weiland has been ranked in the Top 100 Heavy Metal Vocalists by Hit Parader (No. 57).
In 2012, Weiland formed the backing band The Wildabouts. The band received mixed reviews, and some critics and fans noted Weiland's failing health. In December 2015, Weiland died of an accidental drug overdose on his tour bus in Minnesota at the age of 48. Upon his death, many critics and peers offered re-evaluations of Weiland's life and career; those critics included David Fricke of Rolling Stone and Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins, who identified Weiland as one of the "voices of the generation" alongside Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley.

Paralysis
Scott Weiland Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Took a look at the bed
The one that we called home
Bought a ticket to somewhere, anywhere
Did you think of me blind?
'Cause I walked in circles
I know you thought of me unkind
Instead I led you to another
Pack my bags, walking in rain
Here them voices inside my head
Drinking that booze and taking down names
And plates and seeing the place where I dream
Call my name, shout my name
Try to consume the place where I lay
Driving on the freeway passing up cars
Crashed my car, gotta get out of here
Had to rip up my heart, had to patch up my head
At the hotel terrace
Had a drink at the bar, stumbled up and away
Every piss and a girl is a ghost of you
Did you think of me blind?
'Cause I fly around in circles
I know you think of me unwise
But I try to lead you through the minefield
Instead I lead you to another
Pack my bags, walking in rain
Here them voices inside my head
Drinking that booze and taking down names
And plates and seeing the place where I dream
Call my name, shout my name
Try to consume the place where I lay
Driving on the freeway, passing up cars
Crashed my car, gotta get out of here
When you realized me blind
You lead me round in circles
For seven years I read your lies
But still I lead you through that minefield
Find my way back through another
Pack my bags, walking in rain
Here them voices inside my head
Drinking that booze and taking down names
And plates and seeing that place where I dream
Call my name, shout my name
Try to consume the place where I lay
Driving on the freeway, passing up cars
Crashed my car, gotta get out of here
Pack my bags, walking in rain
(Did you think of me blind?)
Here them voices inside my head
Drinking that booze and taking down names
('Cause still I fly around in circles)
And plates and seeing that place where I dream
(Did you think of me blind?)
Try to consume the people I pay
Flying on the freeway light speed ship, rocket ship
('Cause still I fly around in mind fields)
Trying to get out of here
The lyrics of "Paralysis" by Scott Weiland narrate the story of a person who is trying to escape from the pain of a failed relationship. The first two verses describe the attempt to move on physically by leaving the bed they shared, smoking their last cigarette, and buying a ticket to anywhere. However, the singer is haunted by thoughts of their former lover, feeling lost and blind, as they looked for new directions. The chorus emphasizes the confusion and frustration by using visceral imagery, calling out to their lover, who seems to consume every aspect of their life and dreams. The singer then switches between narrating different instances of alcohol-fueled escapades, driving recklessly and causing accidents, indicating a desire to self-destruct. The second half of the song sees them reflect on the years they spent together, feeling betrayed and angry at their partner's lies, yet still trying to find a way back to each other.
Throughout the song, Weiland's lyrics evoke a sense of desperation and confusion, the imagery of "walking in the rain," "hearing voices inside my head" adding to the sense of disorientation. The chorus alternates between a cry for help and an attempt to take control while the verses narrate incidents of physical escape and self-destruction. The use of the word "minefield" conjures up the image of a battlefield, adding to the sense of danger and chaos, indicating that the singer's emotions are out of control and that their relationship might have caused psychological damage.

Smoked my last cigarette
I'm done with this habit
Took a look at the bed
Remembering everything that we had
The one that we called home
The place where we built our hopes
Bought a ticket to somewhere, anywhere
Anything is better than the same old thing
Did you think of me blind?
Were you not even paying attention?
'Cause I walked in circles
I was going nowhere
I know you thought of me unkind
You were disappointed and hurt by me
But I tried to lead you through the minefield
I wanted us to make it through the difficult times
Instead I led you to another
I made the same mistakes over and over
Pack my bags, walking in rain
Moving on and facing new challenges
Here them voices inside my head
Doubting myself and thinking too much
Drinking that booze and taking down names
Trying to forget and not caring who gets hurt
And plates and seeing the place where I dream
Realizing that my life is not what I wanted it to be
Call my name, shout my name
You still haunt me and I can't escape
Try to consume the place where I lay
You took everything from me and I can't let go
Driving on the freeway passing up cars
Trying to outrun my past
Crashed my car, gotta get out of here
Hit rock bottom and wanting a fresh start
Had to rip up my heart, had to patch up my head
Dealing with both emotional and physical pain
At the hotel terrace
Finding temporary relief from my problems
Had a drink at the bar, stumbled up and away
Trying to escape my own reality
Every piss and a girl is a ghost of you
Can't escape the past and everything reminds me of you
When you realized me blind
When you finally understood how I felt
You lead me round in circles
You were just as lost as I was
For seven years I read your lies
I trusted you for too long
But still I lead you through that minefield
I never gave up on us
Find my way back through another
I'll keep trying to find my way back to you
Try to consume the people I pay
I try to replace you with others, but it never works
Flying on the freeway light speed ship, rocket ship
Dreaming of a better life and a fresh start
Trying to get out of here
Wanting to leave everything behind
