Derided by critics early in his career, Weiland was known for his flamboyant and chaotic onstage persona; he was also known for constantly changing his appearance and vocal style, for his use of a megaphone in concerts for vocal effect, and for his battles with substance abuse. Now widely viewed as a talented and versatile vocalist, Weiland has been ranked in the Top 100 Heavy Metal Vocalists by Hit Parader (No. 57).
In 2012, Weiland formed the backing band The Wildabouts. The band received mixed reviews, and some critics and fans noted Weiland's failing health. In December 2015, Weiland died of an accidental drug overdose on his tour bus in Minnesota at the age of 48. Upon his death, many critics and peers offered re-evaluations of Weiland's life and career; those critics included David Fricke of Rolling Stone and Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins, who identified Weiland as one of the "voices of the generation" alongside Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley.

Mockingbird Girl
Scott Weiland Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A fool to try to catch her
Well I don't know
'Cause I don't know, I'm a fool
Yeah, a visionary's daughter
She don't care that you want on her
She'll kill you once
You'll ask her twice
Hey hey rocket boy
Gotta lotta life behind you
Hey hey mockingbird girl
Gotta fly don't let him hold you
'Cause you were born a lucid flower
A tulip and I killed her
I was born to play the fool
Unlike you
No sex
I'm bored with anticipation
This love song radio station
I guess you'll sleep
I'll count sheep
And watch you dream
Hey hey rocket boy
Gotta lotta life behind you
Hey hey mockingbird girl
Gotta fly don't let him hold you
So let's make a run and buy a rocket 'copter
I bought it from a crooked cop
Her breath it smelled like a beer
A warm beer
The first verse of the song "Mockingbird Girl" by Scott Weiland talks about a woman who is elusive like a bird that flies without feathers, making it impossible to catch her. The singer doesn't understand why he is still trying to pursue her, considering he already knows that he is a fool. The subsequent verse mentions the woman's background as a visionary's daughter, independent and unapproachable. The singer acknowledges even if she kills him, he would not mind asking her twice for attention. The chorus of the song mentions the inspiration behind the song's title: the mockingbird girl who keeps flying away.
The second verse of the song talks about the contrasting personalities between the singer and the mockingbird girl. He declares himself as a fool, unlike the girl who exudes confidence and is born to shine. This verse further emphasizes that there is no romantic involvement between the two characters, and the singer is only anticipating the love song radio station. The last lines of the song mention the singer watching her dream while counting sheep before expressing a desire to escape reality by buying a rocket 'copter.
