Derided by critics early in his career, Weiland was known for his flamboyant and chaotic onstage persona; he was also known for constantly changing his appearance and vocal style, for his use of a megaphone in concerts for vocal effect, and for his battles with substance abuse. Now widely viewed as a talented and versatile vocalist, Weiland has been ranked in the Top 100 Heavy Metal Vocalists by Hit Parader (No. 57).
In 2012, Weiland formed the backing band The Wildabouts. The band received mixed reviews, and some critics and fans noted Weiland's failing health. In December 2015, Weiland died of an accidental drug overdose on his tour bus in Minnesota at the age of 48. Upon his death, many critics and peers offered re-evaluations of Weiland's life and career; those critics included David Fricke of Rolling Stone and Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins, who identified Weiland as one of the "voices of the generation" alongside Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley.

Desperation #5
Scott Weiland Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She takes a swing and she can hit
Muddy water
Dirty ditch
Take a swim and walk with me,
Make a steal, the Christmas Tree
Hold the water, hold my hand
Oh, there is no reason
Time to go, oh there is
No reason, play the show
Oh there is no reason
Desperation number five
She takes a swim
Then takes a dive
She tries to hold her, hold
Her hand, the down the muddy
Hand again
The lyrics of Scott Weiland's song Desperation #5 tell a story of a woman who is going through a difficult time. She's in a state of desperation, illustrated through the repetition of the phrase "Desperation number five". She's trying to cope with her problems by taking a swim and a dive, swinging at something she can hit, and being in muddy water and a dirty ditch. However, she finds some solace in the company of the singer. He asks her to take a swim and walk with him, and they make a steal of the Christmas tree. He offers to hold her hand, asking her to hold the water and take its time.
The song's lyrics capture the feeling of being lost and directionless. The repeated phrase "oh there is no reason" suggests that the woman is struggling to find a reason for her predicament. However, the singer is trying to offer her a lifeline through his companionship. The imagery of water - swimming, holding water, taking a dive - is a metaphor for the woman trying to survive her situation.
