After acting school he was discovered by Jean Cocteau and appeared in a wartime production of Les parents terribles ("The Terrible Parents"). His first feature film came in 1946 with his role in Les portes de la nuit ("The Doors of the Night"). He later went on to perform in 80 films including The Pianist (1998).
In 1965 he began a second career as a singer, with the help of Simone Signoret and her husband Yves Montand. Reggiani became one of the most acclaimed performers of French "Chanson" ("song") and although he was in his 40s, his bad-boy image made him popular with both young and older listeners. His best known songs include "Les loups sont entres dans Paris" ("The Wolves Have Entered Paris") and "La femme qui est dans mon lit." ("The Woman Who Is In My Bed").
In later life he became a painter and gave a number of exhibitions of his artwork.
Serge Reggiani died of a heart attack at the age of 82, one day after the death of another well known French singer Sacha Distel. He is interred in the Cimetière du Montparnasse.

Toi tu avais ton manteau rouge
Et je revois ta bouche
Comme un fruit sous la pluie...
Comme un fruit sous la pluie...
Ce soir, je bois !
Heureusement, je ne suis jamais ivre.
Dors...
On parlait politique.
Je m'suis battu avec un type
Et tu m'as emmené
Comme un enfant blessé,
Comme un enfant blessé...
Je bois...
Au combat que tu as mené
Pour m'emmener loin de la fête.
Ce soir, je bois à ta défaite.
Je bois...
Au temps passé à te maudire,
A te faire rire, à te chérir,
The song "La Chanson de Paul" by Serge Reggiani is a melancholic yet beautiful portrayal of a man's life. The lyrics suggest that Paul, the singer, is drinking alone and reflecting on his past. He addresses an unknown person, possibly a lover, who is trying to sleep upstairs while he drinks alone downstairs. The repetition of "je bois" (I drink) throughout the song highlights Paul's alcoholism, which he seems to use to numb his feelings of regret and sadness.
The first verse speaks about Paul's loneliness and his inability to sleep without alcohol. He acknowledges that he made promises but still drinks regardless of his intentions. He raises a glass to the women who rejected him, the children he never had, and the homes he left behind. He then addresses the person upstairs and reminds them that he loves them before urging them to go to sleep.
The second verse delves into Paul's memories of a rainy night when he and his lover left the cinema. He describes himself as elegant, wearing a Canadian coat, while his lover wore a red coat. He recalls her lips, comparing them to fruit in the rain. He then declares that he will stay up all night to write his book, which is his story. He toasts to the letters he never wrote and to the people who wronged him while acknowledging that he forgets where they live. Finally, he toasts to the person who defended him.
In summary, "La Chanson de Paul" is a bittersweet reflection on Paul's life, highlighting his regrets, missed opportunities, and his reliance on alcohol to cope with his emotions.
