They are shooting in B & W but using COLOR lights. They did the same effect in Jeckel and Hide for the transformation. The Actor wears make up that is say blue, under a blue light it does not show up ( especially on B & w Film). then they shift for Blue light off to normal to Red lights on! the Make up is revealed that quick! Very cool trick, done in real time, In camera ( as the lingo goes). Like most all the effect in Bram Stokers Dracula made in the 90's they tried to keep all the effects "in Camera" in real tie, no computer effect, no CGI. I alway like this style of effect BETTER, and I appreciate it more.

Nicholas Sans Pasty

that's impressive, I agree about in camera and practical effects always, cgi has it's uses but often it just looks too much like a computer game especially when overused, much harder to hold suspension of disbelief

Stunning!!! Simple, yet detailed, and EXTREMELY effective!!!!!! THE🐙!! 🧙 It's SO fascinating to learn how they make such visually appealing effects, but especially, how they did them in the earlier days of cinema!!! Thanks for sharing!!
Take Care,

@diddymuck: Yes, I've since learned it was done by applying red hag makeup and using a red filter at first, then switching to a blue filter to reveal the effect. A slick and elegant low-budget effect.

Marvin Jenkins

That scared the crap out of me. Great scene!

Old-Man Parker

Light change! Blue make up. Invisible in blue light. Change to Red or Normal Light, make up appears as if by magic on Black & white Film. They did the same effect in Jeckel and Hide for the transformation.

BizzarreProductions

It's a shame that you can't reproduce this effect in color film!

James Wiseman

Film it in black & white then tint it by hand?

Steve E

@Mikey C Even UV would have a noticeable change in lighting though.

Mikey C

Probably could using UV makeup and lighting rather than red/blue.
