Chad Petree and Jeremy Dawson grew up in Oklahoma and were involved in previous music projects together, including the soundtrack for the videogame Grand Theft Auto III in 2000 and Cloud2Ground. After relocating to Los Angeles, California in 2004, the two recruited vocalist Carah Faye Charnow and drummer Mikey Martin.
Their debut album, We Are Pilots was originally released in January 2005, though versions of the album featuring different cover art and tracklisting would be released later the following year. Three singles were issued: "Le Disko", "You Are the One" and "Rainy Monday". We Are Pilots received a Grammy Award nomination on 6 December 2007 in the category of Best Electronic/Dance Album, but lost to The Chemical Brothers.
The band's second studio album, Season of Poison, was released on 4th November 2008, with Sisely Treasure as vocalist. They have released two singles from their second album: "Ghost Town" and "Ricochet!".
In 2009, Shiny Toy Guns released "Major Tom", a Peter Schilling cover.
In 2011, Carah Faye Charnow returned to Shiny Toy Guns. In addition, Daniel Johansson also joined the band on guitar, synth and bass. In March 2011, the band released a new single "The Sun", available to download for free.

It Became a Lie on You
Shiny Toy Guns Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
On this holiday
When you're creeping up with serious thoughts
And what you're waiting to say
Your words are speaking out of your throat
Like an open grave
Not ever spoke to you in a year
It became a lie on you
It became a lie on you
If you think that I'm not the same
Then I guess you've changed
Blackened by the temperature made
To spare my name
The grave that you've been digging for me
Became your home
For teaming me as back off of me
I hope you know
It became a lie on you
It became a lie on you
It feels like (feels like) you're letting go
I'm back for days to know (feels like, feels like)
Why you're letting go
Bring on the poison that's in your throat
And fight for days, do know (feels like, feels like)
You're letting go
Shocking all the evidence left
On this holiday
The lyrics of Shiny Toy Guns's song 'It Became a Lie on You' is filled with imagery and metaphorical expressions that are open to interpretation. The song starts with a reference to a holiday, suggesting a break or pause from the daily routine, which is soon disrupted by creeping (serious) thoughts. The singer seems to be in a conversation with someone who is struggling to speak up, and the words that finally come out are like an open grave- a burial place devoid of life and light. The theme of death and decay continues with the reference to a grave that the other person has been digging, which has now become their home.
One of the central ideas of the song is the idea of lies- lies that become a part of one's identity and existence. The chorus repeats the phrase, 'It became a lie on you,' suggesting that the person the singer is talking to is living a lie. The second part of the song adds more details to this idea, with the lines, 'If you think that I'm not the same/Then I guess you've changed/Blackened by the temperature made/To spare my name.' The singer seems to be suggesting that the other person is projecting their own lies and insecurities onto the singer, as a way of avoiding their own issues.
Overall, 'It Became a Lie on You' is a song that explores complex themes of identity, deceit, and self-delusion. The lyrics are open-ended and invite multiple interpretations, adding to the song's appeal.

All the evidence left behind is revealing a shocking truth
On this holiday
This holiday is the time when the truth is being uncovered
When you're creeping up with serious thoughts
When you're being contemplative with your thoughts
And what you're waiting to say
And what you want to express but haven't yet
Your words are speaking out of your throat
Your words are coming out involuntarily without processing
Like an open grave
Like an invitation for something undesirable
Not ever spoke to you in a year
Not having talked to you in a year
That's what would I say
If I were to say something, that's what it would be
It became a lie on you
The truth has revealed that you've been lying
If you think that I'm not the same
If you think I've changed
Then I guess you've changed
Then I suppose you have changed too
Blackened by the temperature made
Negatively impacted by the climate created
To spare my name
To save yourself at my expense
The grave that you've been digging for me
The plan that you've been hatching against me
Became your home
Became your place of dwelling
For teaming me as back off of me
For opposing me and stepping back from our relationship
I hope you know
I hope you're aware of your actions and their consequences
It feels like (feels like) you're letting go
I have a feeling that you're giving up
I'm back for days to know (feels like, feels like)
I'm here for quite some time, trying to figure it out
Why you're letting go
I want to know why you're giving up
Bring on the poison that's in your throat
Let out the hurtful feelings you've been holding in
And fight for days, do know (feels like, feels like)
And fight for a long time, I suspect
You're letting go
You're giving up
