Foxholes and Deities
Sianvar Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In sorrow
We will come
Refusal
Delusion

Ressurect these souls to breathe
In the form of memories
We can't bring them back
We can't bring the dead back

When searching for the unknown
Do you often feel alone?

Journey folds
We are warm
Senses cold
We're all torn

Say you want their soul to breathe
What is in us always?

When searching for the unknown
Do you often feel alone?
Living like a funeral
Disown it all
Living like a funeral
No home

Knowing honestly it's all we want
So long our integrity is gone

When searching for the unknown
Do you often feel alone?
Living like a funeral
Disown it all
Living like a funeral
No home

Are you searching at a ghost?
Do you find yourself alone?

Lost the weight upon our souls
Holding, hold

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sianvar's song "Foxholes and Deities" speaks about the human condition of grief and loss. In the first two lines, the writer acknowledges that when faced with sorrow, people often come together but also refuse to accept the truth, leading to delusion. The following lines "resurrect these souls to breathe, in the form of memories, we can't bring them back, we can't bring the dead back" signify the human desire to hold onto the memory of those who have passed away, to keep them alive in their minds and hearts, even though it cannot replace their physical presence.

The writer then asks a question "When searching for the unknown, do you often feel alone?" which reflects the feeling of being lost and confused when trying to understand something that cannot be understood or is beyond human comprehension, such as death. The line "Living like a funeral, disown it all, no home" reinforces the sense of being lost and uprooted, lost in grief and unable to find a place of comfort or home.

The last lines of the song "Are you searching at a ghost, do you find yourself alone, lost the weight upon our souls, holding, hold" questions whether one is looking for something or someone who has already passed, and yet, the weight of the loss still lingers. The song portrays the struggle to come to terms with the finality of death, and while memories may keep loved ones alive in our hearts, we learn to hold on, knowing that holding on is all we can do.

i rarely try interpreting songs, but no one in the comments was talking about the meaning of this one and i think i may have figured it out, so here i go!

i believe this song is perhaps about one wanting to believe in some kind of afterlife against their existing beliefs for the comfort of believing deceased loved ones have passed on to a better place after death, and perhaps that the same will happen for oneself.

the title is obviously referring to the saying "no atheists in foxholes," the claim that in a time of mortal danger even an atheist will believe in a higher power out of desperation.

the lyrics connect to this idea, too.

"In sorrow/We will come/Refusal/Delusion" - after some manner of death, people attend a funeral, perhaps? and in a desperate denial of the loss, people seek to believe anything other than that the deceased is truly gone.

"Ressurecting souls to breathe/In the form of memories" - eulogies, reminescences, anything to keep the idea of the deceased from fading. refusing to let their idea pass on and vanish.

"We can't bring them back/We can't bring the dead back" - no amount of wishing or reminescing or praying will truly resurrect the dead, and this sinks into the psyche of the mourning. even if there is a heaven, it can't be proven because it won't bring the dead back to the living.

"When searching for the unknown/Do you often feel alone?" - i believe these lyrics may be referring to the idea of seeking out proof of the afterlife in fear it may not exist, when others around you are much more comfortable in their beliefs and aren't quite so desperate for that comfort.

"Journey folds/We are warm" - returning from a funeral, the living are left behind by the dead.

"Senses cold/We're all torn" - grief numbs our thoughts and senses, and perhaps the mourners are left in disagreement over the fate of the deceased's spirit?

"Say you want their soul to breathe" - wanting to believe there's something after just so the deceased isn't TRULY completely gone.

"What is it a soul weighs?/What is it your soul weighs?" - debating the real meaning of a "soul" and the meaning of death. where does one go after? will you go the same place?

"Live it like a funeral/Disown it all/Live it like a funeral/No home" - i'm not entirely certain on these lyrics, but perhaps letting grief creep into everyday thoughts and fearing your own death and that of others + the desperate desire to believe in an afterlife being at odds with your own existent beliefs?

"Knowing, honestly it's all we want" - more than anything else just wanting to know what comes after.

"So long, our integrity is gone" - going against one's own personal beliefs out of grieving desperation.

"Are you searching out a ghost?/Do you find yourself alone?/What's the weight of all our souls?" - self-explanatory with the rest of my analysis, i hope.

"Holding, hold" - not really sure about this last one, maybe holding onto one's own beliefs or holding onto the memories of the deceased...?

that's all i have, basically! perhaps i could be completely misreading all this, especially because i've never done something like this before, but at least i feel like i'm on the right track.
either way, it is an absolutely excellent and beautiful song. (and a hell of a jam!)

Joe is definitely killing it on drums for this album. He's one of the best for this type of progressive/expiremental music. This is stuff you can't put in a box man

absolutely Nicholas! I find his and Matt Gartskas drumming heavily influence the way I play when I sit behind the kit recently. Their creativity is off the charts and so inspiring man! I'm proud to be apart of a drumming community that has these guys representing it!!

Him and Matt Mingus from Dance Gavin Dance are just so great.

Nicholas Forshaw

This song is by far his best showcase on the album. It's absolutely astonishing and inspirational to other drummers like myself big time.
