Góðan daginn
Sigur Rós Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ég sendi sólina á þig
Síðla sumardags
Grær hitastig
og greikkar göngulag
Skín í andlitin hlý
Það er alvöru dag
Burt burt með þig ský
Já, burtu út á haf
Þar sem sjórinn flæðir
og salt ísinn bræðir

Við spilum endalaust
Burtu nú afklæðum
Sárin opin græðum

Við spilum endalaust
Sólin stígur á (?)
Kveikir á, sprengir ljósaperur
Leyndar sindrar (?)
(?) Kveinar, baðar geislum hreinum

Ó, góðan daginn
Ég úr þér ríf ísjaka
og grýlukertin
og harðfenni
og hendi út á haf
Þar sem sjórinn flæðir
og salt ísinn bræðir

Við spilum endalaust
Sólin stígur á (?)
Kveikir á, sprengir ljósaperur
Leyndar sindrar (?)
(?) Kveinar, baðar geislum hreinum

Sólin stígur á (?)
Kveikir á, sprengir ljósaperur

Leyndar sindrar (?)
(?) Kveinar, baðar geislum hreinum

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sigur Rós's song Góðan daginn describe a summer day filled with warmth and brightness. The first verse describes the sun shining on the listener, with a gentle summer breeze and a warm temperature making for a perfect day. The second verse sees the listener being urged to venture out to sea, where the salt water and breeze bring a sense of freedom and joy.

The repeated verse "Við spilum endalaust" translates to "We play endlessly," which could refer to the endless possibilities and potential of this perfect summer day. The song's atmospheric and dreamy soundscapes complement the lyrics, transporting the listener to this idyllic summer day.

Overall, the song seems to be celebrating the beauty and wonder of nature, and the transformative power of a perfect day spent in its midst. It's a reminder to embrace the beauty around us and make the most of each moment.

"Good Morning"
I send you the sun
Late in a summer's day
Temperature rises
and the walking pace increases
Shines on the warm faces
It's a real day
Go go away cloud
Yes, out to the sea
Where the sea flows
and salt melts the ice
We play endlessly
Now undress away
Heal the open wounds
We play endlessly
The sun rises up
Switches on, blows up light bulbs
Hidden sparks
(?) Lament, spreads clear rays
Oh, good morning
I pull from you icebergs
and icicles
and frozen snow
and throw out to the sea
Where the sea flows
and salt melts the ice
We play endlessly
The sun rises up
Switches on, blows up light bulbs
Hidden sparks
(?) Lament, spreads clear rays
The sun rises up
Switches on, blows up light bulbs
Hidden sparks
(?) Lament, spreads clear rays

This is a breathtakingly gorgeous piece of music, even without knowing what it is about.  I read the English translation of the lyrics, however, and they are absolutely exquisite.  This is a magnificent band, a new rest-of-my-life favorite.  And from Iceland at that- wonderful!

Escuchar esta canción al despertar y darse un "buenos días" a uno mismo es parte de la rutina. Buenos días! ☆

How do they do it? Absolute perfection. Not an icy perfection, but a fiery perfection. Well, something like that. :-)

I like to listen to this song while walking my dog in Somerset, England which is a very beautiful place. The song enhances the natural beauty around me and the countryside enhances the music. Its a divine duet! The two combine together to give me a feeling of profound contentment. Its good to see that I'm not the only one! The spiritual re-assurance I get from the sheer benevolence of this music staggers me. It restores my faith in humanity and myself. Now not another word. Who's up for a walk?!

What a wonderful comment. I am astounded that I am the first to acknowledge it, 13 years later. I hope you come back to this from time to time and still find that peace.

Such an incredibly beautiful song by an amazing band. I love Sigur Rós. This is prob my fave song off the album. If you like this song, I would also recommend Fragile Bones (Feels Like Home) by Ali Murray, or anything by Ali Murray for that matter. I love sad and dreamy and beautiful atmospheres.
