From their third album (Neon Ballroom) onward, the band have tried to experiment with slightly more complex song structures, pop influences, and the usage of orchestral backing on a few songs, most notably on their fourth album Diorama with composer Van Dyke Parks contributing to three of the tracks. This change is shown on their performance in their only live album "Live At Faraway Stables" where the band plays two sets - the first comprising newer material where they are backed by two keyboardists to simulate orchestral arrangements, and the second containing their earlier material.
2007 saw the release of the band's latest album Young Modern, featuring the lead single Straight Lines; the song reached number one on the ARIA singles charts. The album was supported by a full tour of North America (their first since 1999), and an extensive tour of Australia and New Zealand with fellow Aussie post-grunge rockers Powderfinger, entitled "Across the Great Divide."
To quote Daniel Johns, "I've been thinking a lot since we finished [[album artist=Silverchair]Young Modern] about where this fits into the other stuff we've done. The way I see it, the first album was naivete, the second one was anger, the third one was depression and the last one was escapism. Young Modern is all about acceptance."
The band announced an indefinite hiatus in May 2011:
"We formed Silverchair nearly 20 years ago when we were just 12 years old. Today we stand by the same rules now as we did back then ... if the band stops being fun and if it's no longer fulfilling creatively, then we need to stop. [...] Despite our best efforts over the last year or so, it's become increasingly clear that the spark simply isn't there between the three of us at the moment. Therefore after much soul searching we wanted to let you know that we're putting Silverchair into "indefinite hibernation" and we've decided to each do our own thing for the foreseeable future".

Low
Silverchair Lyrics

Floating on the ground
Like a fading frost?
You've fallen asleep
Next to your bed
And you feel so low
Oh, they've stolen your pride
I've made up my mind
Half of the time, and I feel so low
[Chorus]
Stay and hijack the hurt
I feel so low, I feel so high
Take a look inside my mind
If the object was clear
There wouldn't be a point
Only godless fear
By the end of July
I wonder, will I still feel so low?
Oh, I am host to a guide
Moving in time
And falling in line
I've made up my mind
The papers are signed
And I feel so low
[Chorus]
Once a lover
Never suffer
So far away from here
Feeling hollow
Head to toe, so low
[Chorus]
The song "Low" by Silverchair is a melancholic and introspective track that explores the feeling of being lost and low. The lyrics paint a picture of someone who is struggling with their emotions and feeling disconnected from themselves and the world around them. The opening lines, "Have you ever been lost, floating on the ground, like a fading frost?" set the tone for the rest of the song. The imagery of something fading away like frost is a powerful and evocative analogy for the feeling of disconnect and loneliness.
The song continues with the lines, "Oh, they've stolen your pride, stand up while your conscience sits aside." This verse speaks to the idea of reclaiming one's self-worth in the face of adversity or difficult emotions. The chorus further reinforces this idea, urging the listener to "stay and hijack the hurt." The use of the word "hijack" suggests taking control of one's emotions and turning them into something powerful and productive.
As the song progresses, the lyrics become more introspective and metaphorical. There are references to "godless fear" and a "guide moving in time." These lines speak to the larger existential questions that the singer is grappling with, such as the meaning of life and their place in the world. The song ends on a bittersweet note, with the singer wondering if they will still feel so low by the end of July.
Overall, "Low" is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged song that explores universal themes of loneliness, self-doubt, and the struggle to find meaning in life.
