Don't You
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why don't you write me
I'm out in the jungle
I'm hungry to hear you.

Send me a card,
I am waiting so hard
To be near you.
(La, la, la)
Why don't you write?

Something is wrong
And I know I got to be there.
Maybe I'm lost,
But I can't make the cost
Of the airfare, ooh

Tell me why (Why)
Tell me why (Why)

Why don't you write me,
A letter would brighten
My loneliest evening.

Mail it today
If it's only to say
That you're leaving me.
(La, la, la)

Monday morning, sitting in the sun
Hoping and wishing for the mail to come.
Tuesday, never got a word,
Hm
Wednesday, Thursday, ain't no sign,
Drank a half a bottle of iodine.
Friday, woe is me
Gonna hang my body from the highest tree.
Why don't you write me?
Why don't you write me?
Why don't you write me?
Why don't you write me?
Why don't you write me?

Why don't you write me?
Why don't you write me?

Overall Meaning

The song "Why Don't You Write Me" by Simon & Garfunkel is a beautiful piece that echoes the pain and desperation of a lover craving communication with their partner who is away in the jungle. Through the lyrics, the artist depicts a sense of urgency to reconnect with the partner, who is not replying to any of their letters. The lyrics depict the longing of someone sitting and waiting patiently, yet feeling ignored and abandoned.

The song features a monotonous melody, amplified by Simon and Garfunkel’s signature harmonies, which makes the lyrics more expressive. When the lyrics say “I’m out in the jungle; I'm hungry to hear you”, it conveys the image of a lover being trapped in a foreign and unfamiliar place, striving to connect their partner. The wordings “Something is wrong and I know I got to be there,” show a sense of urgency and despair, accompanied by the statements “Maybe I’m lost, but I can’t make the cost of the airfare.”

The chorus, “Why don't you write me? A letter would brighten my loneliest evening. Mail it today if it's only to say that you're leaving me,” highlights the pain of the singer on not getting any response from their partner, despite being in a long-distance relationship. The feelings of frustration and abandonment the singer feels when they cannot receive any communication from their partner is further shown when he sings about harming himself.

My Dad turned me on to this album as a kid. We listened to it in the car on road trips. Dad blasted it through the house. I'm sure the neighbors loved it too!!!

Love that bari sax solo in the middle. Shows how beautifully retro these guys were back then. Fact is that they were heavily influenced by the Everly Bros and all the great music that came before them. They paid homage to it. And now they're the music of our memories. Bless Simon and Garfunkel!

@johnblake308

If you listen again, I think you'll find it's a sax duet.

@danielrosenfeld6789

@@johnblake308 Ok. If you say so. I don't think so. And I've listened to it several times since your posting. It's a single sax as far as I can tell. You may be mistaking the resonance of the instrument for more than one sax. It's described in other sources as a sax solo break.

@Milesco

@@danielrosenfeld6789 : It's a "sax solo" in the sense that the melody of the non-vocal instrumental interlude is carried by the saxophones (and I think it's perfectly reasonable to call it a "sax solo"), but it's definitely two saxophones. 🎷🎷 🎵 🙂

@danielrosenfeld6789

@@Milesco "The melody of the non-vocal instrumental interlude. . ." Or in simpler terms, a solo or solo break. That's the accepted terminology.
You hear it as a duet. I hear it as a solo with perhaps some overdubbing. I've seen it described as a duet in one source and as a solo in another.
As mentioned in an earlier posting, you could be mistaking the resonance of the instrument and hearing as more than one. Also remember that the baritone sax in this song is doubling the bass. So you could be hearing that as well.

@Milesco

@@danielrosenfeld6789 : It's definitely, without a doubt, two saxophones or an overdub. But my point was simply that I think it's okay to call it a "sax solo" even if it's more than one sax. :-)

In any event, I agree with you that it's great. :-) And "beautifully retro". The song definitely has some classic doo-wop influence to it.
