Homeward Bound
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm sittin' in the railway station
Got a ticket to my destination
On a tour of one-night stands
My suitcase and guitar in hand
And every stop is neatly planned
For a poet and a one-man band

Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound
Home where my thought's escapin'
Home where my music's playin'
Home where my love lies waitin'
Silently for me

Every day's an endless stream
Of cigarettes and magazines
And each town looks the same to me
The movies and the factories
And every stranger's face I see
Reminds me that I long to be

Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound
Home where my thought's escapin'
Home where my music's playin'
Home where my love lies waitin'
Silently for me

Tonight I'll sing my songs again
I'll play the game and pretend
But all my words come back to me
In shades of mediocrity
Like emptiness in harmony
I need someone to comfort me

Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound
Home where my thought's escapin'
Home where my music's playin'
Home where my love lies waitin'

Silently for me
Silently for me

Overall Meaning

The song "Homeward Bound" by Simon & Garfunkel is a powerful and emotional reflection on the struggles and hardships of life on the road as a traveling musician. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a weary performer who is longing to return home, to escape the endless stream of cigarettes and magazines, the monotonous routine of one-night stands, and the faceless crowds of strangers.

The opening verse finds the singer sitting in a railway station with a ticket to his destination in hand, his suitcase and guitar by his side, and every stop along the way neatly planned out. As a poet and one-man band, he is traveling the country, singing his songs, and playing his guitar in hopes of finding relief from his loneliness and longing. Throughout the song, he expresses his desire to return home, where his thoughts escape him, his music fills the air, and his love waits silently.

In the final verse, the singer acknowledges the futility of his journey, acknowledging that his words come back to him in shades of mediocrity and that he needs someone to comfort him. Despite this, he remains steadfast in his desire to return home, where his heart is, where he can find peace, and where his love is silently waiting for him.

Overall, "Homeward Bound" is a poignant and beautiful song that captures the essence of the human condition and the eternal longing for home.

I love the the line "like emptiness in harmony". It's brilliant poetry and a great observation about some facets of life, while using a music reference. It's very impressive that he realized and wrote about it at such a young age.

"Like emptiness in harmony, I need someone to comfort me..."   Such a beautifully expressed lyric of loneliness. Simon's an American treasure.

Beautiful, magical, and innocent songwriting, from a time where intelligent lyricism meant something.

@BB Palmer I am not stuck in the past BB Palmer, and I'm not some numpty who says 'all modern music is rubbish' because that in itself is not true.
There was also a huge amount of crap in the 1970's too !
The difference was, because the main medium was vinyl record, which was expensive to make, record companies had to really be confident you were going to sell enough to make them money, and that quality control weeded out a lot of the shit.
Nowadays anyone can record with free software, and release music for free on bandcamp etc, so there is 10 times the amount of shit to wade through, to find the good stuff.
I'm not stuck my friend, and I have qualifications in music and music technology. I know the 'score' amigo (pun intended lol) ;-))

BB Palmer

It still does. You just need to dig a bit to find it. Don’t get stuck amigo ✌️

This song was played over the PA system on my aircraft carrier as we were leaving Yokosuka Japan, heading home to San Diego after being on a 7 month deployment. That was September 1979. Every time I hear it, I’m taken back to that moment. Great memories.

Laura

How I wish these two had gotten along together. I just love them both. I can’t take sides.

puginabug

I love that moment where they connect. Great song.
