I'm a Rock
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A winter's day
In a deep and dark December
I am alone
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow
I am a rock, I am an island

I've built walls
A fortress deep and mighty
That none may penetrate
I have no need of friendship
Friendship causes pain
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain
I am a rock, I am an island

Don't talk of love
Well, I've heard the word before
It's sleeping in my memory
I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died
If I never loved, I never would have cried
I am a rock, I am an island

I have my books
And my poetry to protect me
I am shielded in my armor
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb
I touch no one, and no one touches me
I am a rock, I am an island

And a rock feels no pain
And an island never cries

Overall Meaning

The song "I am a Rock" by Simon & Garfunkel is a haunting portrayal of loneliness and isolation. The lyrics describe a person who has built emotional barricades around themselves, living in a self-imposed isolation. The song starts with the picture of a winter day in December, where a person is alone and gazing from the window at the snow-covered streets below. The lines "I am a rock, I am an island" establish the metaphor that the person is as immovable and isolated as these inanimate objects. They have built walls around themselves, trying to protect themselves from pain and heartbreak.

The songwriter creates an atmosphere of emotional detachment, as the singer reveals that they have no need for friendship, and even hate laughter and love. The feelings of the solitude are evident in the line "Hiding in my room, safe within my womb. I touch no one, and no one touches me." The song ends on a poignant note, where the singer states that "And a rock feels no pain, and an island never cries," indicating that their isolation has become a safe haven and that they are content in their detachment.

"I Am A Rock"

A winter's day
In a deep and dark December;
I am alone,
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

I've built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

Don't talk of love,
But I've heard the words before;
It's sleeping in my memory.
I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries.

@SecondMarlowe

I can see no other interpretation than that this is an introverted, bitter person who let love burn him once, and now has shut himself off from companionship and anything that could lead to being hurt again. There is no god involved.

It is a typical "teen angst" song like has been written by millions of teenaged boys throughout history, but never as perfectly as this one.

This, and any other song IS open to interpretation, and you might interpret it as being about a group of teens barreling down Highway 66 in a Mustang until a blown tire forces them off the road and over a cliff into freezing waters.

But that would be an incorrect interpretation of this song. So would any that involves anything other than I've said above.

@Katdaddyruffin

This song reminds me of the architect that built my mom's house, never met the guy, but she says he's a true loner, and very cold almost like he was made of stone.
