Don't You
Simon and Garfunkle Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
At the start gets, I hoped
That for once I had escaped the fakes, the snakes
Waste of time, so face to face
I'll be bold enough to throw
On an itch I belong to say, to say, to say
The fist is old, but this old
It's dead and ended now
Why you should still be here
Go
Where did we go wrong?
I don't even like you now, like you
I'm not like you
You ain't what I want
And time will never work this out
Oh no, I've gone cold
In the heart
Where did we go wrong?
I don't even like you now
Forget you
Oh no, I've gone cold
In the heart
Where did we go wrong?
I don't even like you now
Forget you
I don't like you
All the way
Said not confused we're in the rain
It's a losing hand, fold
Why play on nothing to gain?
All on the rates
The fist is old, but this old
It's dead and ended now
Left are no reasons why
You shouldn't even be here
Go
Oh no, I've gone cold
In the heart
Where did we go wrong?
I don't even like you now
Forget you
Oh no, I've gone cold
In the heart
Where did we go wrong?
I don't even like you now
Forget you
I don't like you
All the way
Done with right
I just don't feel this
I'm not all over, it's there
Through the time, that's where the real is
This love has taken its last breath
Where did we go wrong?
I don't even like you now, like you
I'm not like you
You ain't what I want
And time will never work this out
Oh no, I've gone cold
In the heart
Where did we go wrong?
I don't even like you now
Forget you
Oh no, I've gone cold
In the heart
Where did we go wrong?
I don't even like you now
Forget you
I don't like you
The lyrics of Simon and Garfunkel's song "Don't You" convey a sense of disillusionment and resentment in a failed relationship. The song explores the emotions of the singer who has reached a breaking point and no longer wants to be with their partner.
In the opening lines, "Fade to the darkness all the way, At the start gets, I hoped, That for once I had escaped the fakes, the snakes," the singer describes a sense of relief at the beginning of the relationship, hoping to have found someone genuine. However, they soon realize that their partner is not what they expected, feeling like a waste of time and longing to be free from the relationship.
The chorus highlights the central question of the song, "Where did we go wrong? I don't even like you now, like you. I'm not like you, You ain't what I want, And time will never work this out." Here, the singer expresses a strong dislike for their partner and acknowledges that they have grown apart. They believe that there is no chance of reconciling their differences and finding happiness together.
As the song progresses, the lyrics continue to emphasize the singer's detachment and coldness towards their partner. The phrase "Oh no, I've gone cold, In the heart" is repeated multiple times, indicating the emotional distance that has developed between them. The singer questions where the relationship went wrong, admitting that they no longer have any positive feelings towards their partner.
In the final verse, the lyrics further emphasize the singer's lack of connection and disinterest, stating "Done with right, I just don't feel this, I'm not all over, it's there, Through the time, that's where the real is, This love has taken its last breath." It becomes clear that the singer has reached a point of finality, recognizing that their love has died and there is no going back.
Overall, "Don't You" portrays the frustration and disappointment of a failing relationship, where the singer realizes that their partner is not what they thought, leading to a loss of affection and ultimately the desire to move on and forget about them.

Why don't you write me
I'm out in the jungle
I'm hungry to hear you.
Send me a card,
I am waiting so hard
To be near you.
Why don't you write?
Something is wrong
And I know I got to be there.
Maybe I'm lost,
But I can't make the cost
Of the airfare, ooh
Tell me why (Why)
Tell me why (Why)
Why don't you write me,
A letter would brighten
My loneliest evening.
Mail it today
If it's only to say
That you're leaving me.
(La, la, la)
Monday morning, sitting in the sun
Hoping and wishing for the mail to come.
Tuesday, never got a word,
Hm
Wednesday, Thursday, ain't no sign,
Drank a half a bottle of iodine.
Friday, woe is me
Gonna hang my body from the highest tree.
Why don't you write me?
Why don't you write me?
Why don't you write me?
Why don't you write me?
Why don't you write me?
Why don't you write me?
Why don't you write me?

My Dad turned me on to this album as a kid. We listened to it in the car on road trips. Dad blasted it through the house. I'm sure the neighbors loved it too!!!

Love that bari sax solo in the middle. Shows how beautifully retro these guys were back then. Fact is that they were heavily influenced by the Everly Bros and all the great music that came before them. They paid homage to it. And now they're the music of our memories. Bless Simon and Garfunkel!

If you listen again, I think you'll find it's a sax duet.
@danielrosenfeld6789
@@johnblake308 Ok. If you say so. I don't think so. And I've listened to it several times since your posting. It's a single sax as far as I can tell. You may be mistaking the resonance of the instrument for more than one sax. It's described in other sources as a sax solo break.
@Milesco
@@danielrosenfeld6789 : It's a "sax solo" in the sense that the melody of the non-vocal instrumental interlude is carried by the saxophones (and I think it's perfectly reasonable to call it a "sax solo"), but it's definitely two saxophones. 🎷🎷 🎵 🙂
@danielrosenfeld6789
@@Milesco "The melody of the non-vocal instrumental interlude. . ." Or in simpler terms, a solo or solo break. That's the accepted terminology.
You hear it as a duet. I hear it as a solo with perhaps some overdubbing. I've seen it described as a duet in one source and as a solo in another.
As mentioned in an earlier posting, you could be mistaking the resonance of the instrument and hearing as more than one. Also remember that the baritone sax in this song is doubling the bass. So you could be hearing that as well.
@Milesco
@@danielrosenfeld6789 : It's definitely, without a doubt, two saxophones or an overdub. But my point was simply that I think it's okay to call it a "sax solo" even if it's more than one sax. :-)
In any event, I agree with you that it's great. :-) And "beautifully retro". The song definitely has some classic doo-wop influence to it.
