Lyon grew up in Ocean Grove, New Jersey and graduated from Neptune High School. Southside Johnny first achieved prominence in the mid-1970s as the second act to emerge from the Jersey Shore music scene and be considered part of the Jersey Shore sound, following Bruce Springsteen. Southside's first three albums, I Don't Want to Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts of Stone (1978), were Stax-influenced R&B arranged and produced by the co-founder of the band and Springsteen confederate Steven Van Zandt and largely featured songs written by Van Zandt and/or Springsteen. The Van Zandt-written "I Don't Want To Go Home" became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. Other notable songs included "The Fever","Talk to Me," "This Time It's For Real," "Love on the Wrong Side of Town," and the definitive version of Springsteen's " Hearts of Stone."

Southside has long been considered the Grandfather of "the New Jersey Sound." Jon bon Jovi has acknowledged Southside as "his reason for singing." In 1982 the Rolling Stone Magazine voted the album Hearts of Stone among the top 100 albums of the 70's and 80's. In 1987, Southside and the Jukes were featured in the film Adventures in Babysitting performing at a college frat party.

Since 2001 Southside Johnny and the Jukes have toured the UK and Europe as an annual event, their first since the 1992 Better Days tour. His most recent album is Grapefruit Moon: The Songs Of Tom Waits (2008).

Saw these live in Newport, Rhode Island in August 2006. Unbelievable coincidence because I had only discovered them six months earlier. We were going to Boston from home in England in the August and, by pure chance, they were on at a club in Newport the first Sunday we were there. Wife and I loved every single minute of that night. A great sound that lives on forever.

I recall when Johnny opened for Emerson, Lake and Palmer at CNE Stadium way back in 1977. 15 minutes into the ELP set the audience was shouting bring back Johnny. I became a fan for life.

Sincerely doubt that. ELP was the headliner. People paid to see ELP not Johnny. Completely different music. And, "musically" ELP was hard to match in that time. ELP is still a very respected band. Asbury Dukes? They had their time.

i can remember hearing this at happy hour at the poor house west in syracuse. it was 1980 or 1981 - right around that time. i had a few glasses of courage and started to sing it to the girl i was seeing (later married). when it got to the part "whatever happened to you and i?" she got all serious and said "what do you mean?" thinking there WAS something that happened between her and i. too funny. it was the only song i ever sung to anyone then or since. god! what a great tune - and what a great life back then.

Late to the party but remembered during my days as a young man that there was an unfortunately short-lived show on Fox called "Down the Shore" that I enjoyed and vaguely remembered the theme song going having lyrics "...I don't wanna go home..."

Thanks to wonderful YT I found someone had posted the intro and a few show clips and it took me back to that time and helped me appreciate this great song even more. What a great song. I've never been to the Jersey Shore but this song takes me there. Great tradition of music in NJ

Much loved gig in 70's Scotland Apollo that was headlined in UK by Graham Parker and saw The Dukes as support. Blown away by the horns and that voice. I believe both bands then toured stateside with the roles reversed.

In September 2001 (the week after 9/11) I was visiting NYC when Southside Johnny & G. E. Smith (the guitarist on Saturday Night Live from 1985 to 1995 and Gilda Radner's ex-husband) put on a benefit show at B.B. King's Blues Club & Grill. Man that show was awesome. 1971, home from the Army, went to a bar in Greenwood Lake NY. Big joint, two like levels, he was playing, I went nuts, asked him to play this song three times, they did. Slept the night away in bars parking lot Then I saw him again in A.C. maybe 6 years ago, beach bar yet, talked to him, he actually remembered that I I was so crazy happy to be home.

club casino Hampton beach....every July....Southside comes and rocks the house....different sound each time...but he still plays all the favorites too....love that soulful voice...he brings it ever concert.....

I've been to the club casino many many times,never saw Southside Johnny but many others:cheap trick, (was so close to the stage i got a rick neilson guitar pick when he tossed some into the crowd!), cyndi Lauper(got kicked out of that show,brought a video camera in,in1989 you couldn't record shows! like today!!)Joan jet,George carlin(gave my almost new Carlin shirt to my son 20 years later when he became a fan),heuy lewis,(saw him eyeballing my then wife when she walked past the stage to visit the ladies room!!(felt a little proud!!!)),John cafferty,foreigner(got to sit in coca cola vip box,I was designed driver and when my group ordered drinks I ordered a coke,the bottle came,it was one that had people's names on them,and it had MY name on it!!coincidence,or just good karma for being the d.d.?),hootie, blue oyster cult,(sorry to ramble!!)The club casino is 15 minutes away from where I live and is one of the best venues to see a show!!I've got to check out this year's lineup for Southside Johnny, thanks for reminding me!!

Saw Southside Johnny Pittsburgh early 70's. Later at Holiday Inn he danced with me and my friend at their club! He was great and so nice!

What happened to John Lyon- I am his biggest Fan- 1980 NY Eve 1980 Capitol Theater, Passaic, NJ! I must say to date Johnny never failed to dissapoint the crowd and I surely reminisce about that kind of showmanship!
