Little Queen
Heart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You'd rather have wine than gin
Only the finest by your skin
Always running after Time, catching
You're fancy with rhyme
Shining on the front page again

Hot on the presses today, little queen
Making your passion play, little queen
Nobody knows your melancholy mind,
Little queen

Away from the sellers, the papers said
Your crown was tight and heavy on your head
Still you danced and you sang, all night
The telephone rang
Music kept on playing from your pen.

Hot on the presses today, little queen
Making your passion play, little queen
Nobody knows your melancholy mind,
Little queen

Raining Raining- he knows your Soul ain't free
Raining Raining- he feels you little queen

Slipping away with your gypsy band
Hot on your music and playing a winning hand
He was standing in the line, thinking how you

Moved his mind
Feeling like he held you in his hand

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Heart's song "Little Queen" address the complexities and paradoxes of fame and fortune, particularly in the music industry. The singer describes a person who prefers wine to gin, and only the finest kind, implying that they are accustomed to luxury and excess. They are always on the move, chasing after time, but are skilled in writing poetry and songs that shine on the front page. The person is described as a "little queen" who is passionate about making music but also has a melancholy mind that nobody knows about. The second verse discusses the pressures of fame and how "the papers said your crown was tight and heavy on your head," yet you continue to dance and sing all night. The telephone rings, and music keeps playing from your pen, indicating your continuous creativity.

The chorus repeats the line, "Hot on the presses today, little queen. Making your passion play, little queen. Nobody knows your melancholy mind, little queen." The person being described here is deeply talented, but also deeply misunderstood, and the chorus highlights this duality. The bridge features the phrase, "Raining Raining - he knows your Soul ain't free. Raining Raining - he feels you little queen," which could be an allusion to a person who understands what the little queen is going through. The final verse describes the little queen slipping away with her gypsy band, being hot on her music and playing a winning hand. The final line, "Feeling like he held you in his hand" suggests that the little queen is elusive, and even if you feel like you have got her, she is untouchable.

Overall, "Little Queen" is a lyrical exploration of what it means to be an artist and have public recognition, and the toll that this lifestyle can take on a person. It highlights both the glamour and the heartache of fame and how it can be difficult to maintain a sense of self amidst it all.

Heart never gets old. When I went to the Experience Music Project in Seattle, Heart got a tiny little mention. Hendrix and Nirvana got entire rooms. Heart were the first ladies of rock. They deserve better.

This song is criminally underrated- it has always been my favorite of all Heart's incredible repertoire. It was overshadowed by the brilliant Barracuda, but the sheer strength and beauty of the lyrics and music come shining through. No one ever did it better than Ann & Nancy!
