You Affect Me
Souvenirs Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
Creeping up to your skull
Yeah, you say you'll do anything
So they know what you mean
You say you affect me
Yeah, it's hard to explain
I'd give up my left arm
Everything would feel right
The sentiment is new to me
And when I close my eyes
All I see is you
No, you don't have to be afraid
Know that your heart is gonna break
And will never be the same
But will be ok
So, you're looking for love
Just like everyone does
You want your share of it
But don't use your body
Don't be untrue to yourself
I've already done that
I'll tell you right now
You'll get tired of playing
The role of a stranger
Take it in slow, kid
It's a long ride
And everyone is scared, but
No, you don't have to be afraid
Know that your heart is gonna break
And will never be the same
But will be ok
No, you don't have to be afraid
Know that your heart is gonna break
And will never be the same
But will be okay
No, you don't have to be afraid
Know that your heart is gonna break
And will never be the same
But will be okay
The lyrics of "You Affect Me" by Souvenirs delve into the complexities and vulnerabilities of love and relationships. The opening lines, "Feel it in your backbone, Creeping up to your skull," suggest a visceral and intense emotional connection that is difficult to ignore. The singer acknowledges their deep feelings for someone and expresses a willingness to go to great lengths for them, even sacrificing a part of themselves metaphorically to be with the person they desire. The line "Everything would feel right, The sentiment is new to me" indicates that this connection brings a sense of completeness and fulfillment that they have not experienced before.
The lyrics also touch on the fear and uncertainty that can accompany love. The repeated reassurances, "No, you don't have to be afraid, Know that your heart is gonna break, And will never be the same, But will be ok," convey a message of acceptance and resilience in the face of potential heartache. Despite the challenges and risks involved, the singer encourages the listener to embrace love and its transformative power, assuring them that even though their heart may break, they will ultimately be okay.
The song also addresses the universal desire for love and connection while cautioning against compromising one's true self in pursuit of it. The lines "So, you're looking for love, Just like everyone does, You want your share of it, But don't use your body, Don't be untrue to yourself" emphasize the importance of authenticity and self-respect in relationships. The singer reflects on their own past mistakes and regrets, acknowledging the consequences of betraying their own values.
In the final verses, the lyrics convey a sense of empathy and understanding towards the listener, offering words of wisdom and encouragement. The advice to "Take it in slow, kid, It's a long ride" acknowledges the journey of love as a gradual and sometimes daunting process, but also highlights the shared experience of fear and uncertainty that comes with it. Ultimately, the repetitive reassurance that "Your heart is gonna break, And will never be the same, But will be okay" encapsulates the bittersweet nature of love, with its highs and lows, its joys and sorrows, and the resilience that comes from embracing it wholeheartedly.
