The band's long career has seen them successfully adopt many different musical genres; including glam pop, power pop, electronic dance music and mainstream pop. Despite these many styles, a recognizable "Sparks sound" remains throughout, and they have enjoyed a large cult following since their first releases. Sparks have been highly influential on the development of popular music, in particular on the late 1970s scene, when in collaboration with Giorgio Moroder (and Telex subsequently), they reinvented themselves as an electronic pop duo, and abandoned the traditional rock band line up. In contrast to the esteem in which they are held by such peers as Depeche Mode, New Order, Morrissey and They Might Be Giants, who all cite Sparks as a major influence, their almost constantly changing styles and unique visual presentations have sometimes seen them dismissed as a novelty act.
The 2002 release of Lil' Beethoven, their self-described "genre-defining opus", and 2006's Hello Young Lovers (their 20th studio album) have brought Sparks renewed critical and commercial success, and seen them continue to "steer clear of pop conventions."
The 2021 documentary film 'The Sparks Brothers', directed by Edgar Wright, has renewed interest in the band for a new audience.

The lyrics of Sparks's song Rock Rock Rock are simplistic and repetitive, but the underlying meaning can be interpreted in various ways. The opening line "I am a cat who walks alone" suggests that the singer is an independent individual who does not follow the crowd or conform to the norms of society. The idea of a cat walking alone also portrays a sense of self-reliance and a desire for freedom.
The repeated phrase "meow meow meow" could symbolize a form of communication that is often disregarded or misunderstood by humans. The singer may be expressing frustration that their true thoughts and feelings are not being heard, and they have to resort to a language that is often ridiculed. The manic repetition of the phrase also gives the impression of a person who is at their wit's end and cannot bear to be ignored anymore.
Overall, the lyrics of Rock Rock Rock can be interpreted as a rebellious anthem for those who feel overlooked or misunderstood by society. The song encourages individuals to embrace their individuality and use unconventional means to express themselves.

Lyrics:
Soft cabbages
They get you into trouble
They imply a lack of cole slaw and commitment
Soft cabbages
They get you into trouble
They lack feeding and fervor
They imply a certain heir of indecision
And if you put a sub [sandwich] to my head
What a crock, crock, crock
Don't feed me, don't feed me, don't feed me
...
So true. Thank you, Sparks, for calling it like it is.
