Turn Back The Clock
Steam-Powered Giraffe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see a smile, it's bright
As a dawns break of light
Is it meant for me
this time?
Can I keep it close
to warm me forever?

Time can make the world strange
Folks you knew don't seem the same
Time don't care
it beats you there
and take it all from you
Don't you think
if every blink
is safe from all you knew?

I see a girl here
and she's smiling
Missing two front teeth
Ages three plus three
Well she's a laughing
Her hair is golden
Her toes are tapping
to the robot band

I still her now, smiling
Her hair done up in bows
Her bright eyes twinkling
She hums a little song
for me
From the music box
given by mommy

Turn back the clock
Turn back the clock
Turn back the clock
For my love song

The autumns roll by
A young lady
takes the child's place
Pig tailed freckled face
Well she's a working
On rolling
While the world does change
her smile stays the same

There is a woman
with a man
Her hair is dyed black
that smile, still came back
After the curtains
she leaves a little box
A tiny dancer spins
Music plays from within

Turn back the clock
Turn back the clock
Turn back the clock
For my love song

A little girl sits
And she's laughing
She looks just like her golden curls
The smile's there
It's not the same smile
Where'd my girl run to?
Will she be back soon?

I see her now, smiling
Come home, back to me
Oh, my little song
Where did she go?
Where did she go?
Where did she go?
Don't leave
Don't leave

Turn back the clock
Turn back the clock
Turn back the clock

Turn back the clock
Turn back the clock
Turn back the clock

For my love song

Overall Meaning

The Steam-Powered Giraffe's song "Turn Back the Clock" is an emotional ballad that focuses on the passage of time and how it can change a person's life. The main theme of the song is a plea to turn back time to the moments in life that are cherished the most. The opening verse sets the tone for the whole song, where the singer sees a smile that is bright like the dawn's break of light, and the question is asked if the smile is meant for them. The singer wants to keep that smile close and wants it to warm them forever.

The song then moves to the concept of time and how it can make the world strange. Friends and family members who were once so familiar are now different. Time does not care and it beats you there. The singer wants to know if every blink can be safe from all they knew. Later the song focuses on a little girl with golden hair, who is smiling and missing two front teeth. She is laughing and tapping her toes to the robot band. As the song progresses, we see the little girl grow up, and eventually, we see a woman with a man who still has that same smile. However, we also see her leave a little box containing a tiny dancer that spins, and music plays from within.

Overall, the song "Turn Back the Clock" is a bittersweet reflection on the passage of time and the cherished moments of a person's life. The singer is searching for a way to keep those moments in their life forever, but unfortunately, time does not work that way.

For me, this song explains how difficult life as a robot really is. Rabbit may have grown close to the girl over time, the little girl, Julia, was Rabbits biggest fan, they were best friends and rabbit thought of her as a daughter but...Her, being a Robot, was forced to stand back and watch as she grew older, he rembers her smile because it was unique, and he will never forget her. ~Konna

I think this is just shows life in general. I have a little girl who is nearly 3 and it makes me sad knowing one day she will no longer be my little toddler and a grown up.

As I sit and listen to this and watch my 6 year old (Age is 3+3) daughter growing up grinning at me with her missing 2 front teeth and her bright brown eyes, I once again thank you for just being you SPG. I picture myself listening to this in 20 years and seeing my wife's face smiling back in hers as she is hugging a man who loves her just as much as I love my wife. We only discovered SPG 3 months ago, but already feel like you will be part of our families lives for years and years to come. Thank you to everyone who has been a part helping you create the amazing thing that is Steam Powered Giraffe.
