Top of the World Down

Top of the World Down

Overall Meaning

"Top of the World" is a song by Stephen Walking, which is an upbeat and optimistic song about feeling invincible and on top of the world. However, the lyrics suggest that the feeling of being on top of the world can also be overwhelming, causing one to feel "down".

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "Top of the World", which can be interpreted as a metaphor for success and achievement. However, the phrase "Down" that follows suggests that even when we achieve our goals and feel at our highest point, we can still experience moments of doubt and insecurity, which can bring us back down to reality.

The verses describe some of the challenges that the singer has faced, such as feeling like an outsider or being underestimated by others. Despite these obstacles, the singer is determined to keep pushing forward and reaching for the top.

Overall, "Top of the World" is a song about the highs and lows of life, and how even when we experience success, we can still struggle with self-doubt and uncertainty.

So far on this chronological journey through Monstercat, I must say, that I'm currently most proud of Stephen Walking. He appears to have released the most tracks so far up to this point and you can really see his development. For example, here, we see Stephen Walking's first deviation from dubstep. It's always interesting to see artists reach new boundaries outside of their comfort zone. Although this strategy didn't work for Arion, let's take a look at how Stephen Walking handles it.

The song immediately introduces the main melodies at full force preparing for some quick musical development. Throughout the first minute of the song, various beats and background bass type noises are introduced to compliment the melody. This makes for a great build up as the melody is completely constant, but its surrounding noises allow it to grow more and more intense eventually culminating into a climax.

The resulting climax is upbeat and features some nice bass to keep the song moving. I really enjoy how the bass stops any part of the song from staying repetitive in any way possible. I'm not exactly sure what I think of the siren noise that appear throughout the song, but it surprisingly doesn't annoy me. I think it adds to the song a bit.

The transition into the next build up is great due to some interesting distortion effects, and the return of the main melody as well as a new one. The build u isn't as good as it was the first time, but I still enjoy it nonetheless.

The second climax is very similar to the first, but I find the transitioning into the closer to be somewhat interesting as I believe that it's Monstercat's first example of half time. It works great, allowing for the closer to appear smoothly and simply.

The closer itself isn't entirely interesting, but I do think it's the best way to end the song as it brings a nice touch of familiarity and it really fades out nicely.

This song is pretty good. I don't see any outstanding flaws and it's got a nice feel to it. It's good to see that trying out a new genre worked well for Stephen Walking and it indicates that there's plenty more in the future.
