Submethod Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Shouldn't fight what's coming
Ebb and flow, cynical as we roll

When you find your low
Underground and crawling slow
Searching out our fate
Locked behind a guarded gate
We're alone, but it's crowded
Here, inside, no priest will venture
We are dead, we are dead, yet again

Much too long been digging
Much too proud of the jewel you found
Got that balance at your back
Like a guardsman making rounds
To the light we keep digging
And I'll be damned if I'll turn back now
Whichever path I make my own
Until I'm rotting in the ground

Don't let it find your number
Redefine always right on time

Don't let it find your number
You might just lose your mind

Overall Meaning

The first two lines of the song, 'Shouldn't fight what's coming, Ebb and flow, cynical as we roll' suggest that resistance is futile and that it's better to just go with the flow of life. The ebb and flow refers to the ups and downs of life, and the cynical tone suggests that even though we may not always like what comes our way, it's best to just accept it.

The second stanza features imagery of being buried underground and searching for our fate, which is locked behind a guarded gate. This imagery is a metaphor for feeling trapped and unable to find our purpose or destiny. The line 'We are dead, we are dead, yet again' could suggest feelings of hopelessness and the sense that we've been through this all before.

The third stanza speaks to the idea of always moving forward, no matter how hard it may be. The line 'Much too long been digging, much too proud of the jewel you found' suggests that we can often get stuck in our own pursuits and forget to look up and see the bigger picture. 'To the light we keep digging' could represent the idea of always striving for something better, while the final lines 'Until I'm rotting in the ground' implies that we should never stop striving until the end of our lives.

The final stanza warns against allowing life to consume us, urging us to maintain a sense of individuality and not let our identities be reduced to mere numbers. 'Redefine always right on time' could suggest that we should constantly redefine ourselves and adapt to our circumstances, while the final line suggests that losing our sense of self could lead to madness.
