Demons
Super Furry Animals Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Clarity just confuses me
The lines drawn on a map
A strange assembly

When there's northerners in southerners
And westenders in eastenders
And sunny days in January
Left spaces in my diary

But the demons never need to know
What the demons never got to see
As we fall in and out of line
Stay in touch now for a while
Coz the demons never need to know
What the demons never got to see
As we fall in and out of line
Stay in touch now for a while

Coz I know that
Apathy only ruined me
Hanging around waiting for calamity

And by the year four million
Our skins will be vermilion
I own a dartboard memory
So I'll forget any felony

But the demons never need to know
What the demons never got to see
As we fall in and out of line
Stay in touch now for a while
For the demons never need to know
What the demons never got to see
As we fall in and out of line
Stay in touch now for a while

[Bridge]
'Cause I know that you know that we know they don't know what's going on

And the demons never need to know
What the demons never got to see
As we fall in and out of line
Stay in touch now for a while
For the demons never need to know
What the demons never got to see
As we fall in and out of line
Stay in touch now for a while

For the demons never need to read
What they never got around to write
A flirt with mediocrity
Comes with a heavy penalty
But the demons never need to read
What they never got around to write
A flirt with mediocrity
Comes with a heavy penalty

[Bridge]
'Cause I know that you know that we know they don't know what's going on

Overall Meaning

The chorus of "Demons" by Super Furry Animals is filled with paradoxical lines that provide a metaphorical backdrop for the theme of the song. The perplexity starts with the song's title. Even though "demons" is plural, there isn't a single reference in the song to a specific demon or demons. While the lyrics might allude to personal battles, the primary demon in this song seems to be misconceptions.

The first verse of "Demons" talks about confusion and the arbitrary divisions inherited from the past, that space out individuals, and the curious dynamic between the people separated by both time and space. It is a commentary on the futility of borders and the inhabitants' untold stories. Moreover, the song informs that the demons in question are better uninvolved, unaware and unmentioned.

The second verse expands its focus to a more individualistic viewpoint, with the singer admitting they've allowed apathy to take hold of their life. Regardless of which demons haunt them, internal or external, the singer mines hope from being able to ignore them completely. The bridge then underpins the central irony of the chorus: While the demons may always be present, each person is capable of taking control of their lives and making their own meaning.

I love the satisfaction of not hearing a track for many years and then remembering the lyrics when you sing along to it when you hear it again

@niallkennedy23

Ha ha..............yeah man. Same here!

You just earned yourself a high five.

@harrisondavis2003

Exactly the same. Listened to the songbook (singles album) on CD all the time when I was about 10, just as I was getting into Oasis and Blur. 5 years later, I still remember most of them

@bellycuda

Right? Such a joy!

As a 15-year-old who lives in America, I find SFA the most awesome welsh band I’ve discovered thanks to a friend of mine. This song has always cheered me up if I felt down and sad. Radiator was and still is one of my three favorite albums by them. Keep on rockin you furry animals

@screamtoasigh9984

The Manic Street Preachers AND Gorkys Zygotic Mynci would like a word with you.

@deadchannel3146

ScreamToASigh I know Manic Street Preachers but I don’t know about that other band you mentioned

@katethomas5712

@@deadchannel3146 Start with 'Patio song' and Spanish dance troupe. Gorkys have split now, but I saw them live once, just over the border from Wales

@Xero The Almighty
SFA were the best band of the 90’s UK rock explosion. Supergrass a close second. Check out Mogwai another great Welsh band that Gruff Rhys has worked with before.

@lorenwyman

I'm also an American who has developed in interest in Welsh music after I became one of the few American fans of the Manic Street Preachers. I went into your channel playlists and found you have REM, Radiohead, Talk Talk, and Rush's awesome and horrendously underrated Test For Echo album, so you've earned my respect. Not to sound like a boomer (I'm 22), but I'm glad someone your age is listening to such quality music. I wish you the best in your life, PS love the Smeargle avatar.
