Mountain People
Super Furry Animals Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They don't care about
You and me
Obviously
No not us
We're the mountain people

So far away from those
Tree lined streets
Look so neat
Not for us
No fat chance
We're the mountain people

They'll seek us in the valley
They'll seek us on the plain
They own the milk and runny honey
And they're not quite the same

And we
Live together under
Fantasy
Oak trees
In the dark
We make sparks
So unique
We're the mountain people

Curiosity comes to
Plead with me
Vanity
Strangles me
Pulls me
Shakes me down
We're the mountain people

They'll seek us in the valley
They'll seek us on the plain
They own the milk and runny honey
And they're not quite the same

Because
They don't care about
You and me
Obviously
Hand-me-down
Culture
Waiting for the vulture
Yes, yes, yes
We're the mountain people

Hibernation comes so early
This year
Dig the peat
Pile it high
Let it dry
One last chance at ignorance
No fat chance
We're the mountain people

One short blast was
Followed by
Two longer ones
Short blast
Long blast
Coming from the outcast
Put me in a deep freeze
And I'll sneeze
With the mountain people

From a distance
I can see them
Pacing
(Marching)
Upstream
Slowly
Ruthlessly
And then
Steady
Nets and cages
Open
Ready
Long-term
Memory
Serves me
Worry
Take me
Break me
Any way you fancy

Deep freeze put me in it and I'll sneeze
A deep freeze put me in it and I'll sneeze
A deep freeze put me in it and I'll sneeze
A deep freeze put me in it

(So I'll make history)

Overall Meaning

The Super Furry Animals' song "Mountain People" describes the lives of those who live far away from the urban, tree-lined streets in rural, mountainous areas. The song is about how those living in the mountains are often disregarded by those in power, and are seen as outsiders in culture and society. The lyrics "They don't care about you and me" show how the mountain people are seen as insignificant by those in power, and how they have no say in how their land and resources are used. The song also touches on themes of hibernation, isolation, and the power of memory.

The chorus of "Mountain People" repeats the line "We're the mountain people," which creates a sense of pride and unity amongst those who live in this geographical location. They may be different from those in the city, but they are not alone in their way of life. The song touches on themes of isolation and being viewed as outsiders in society. However, the chorus celebrates the unique community that exists among those living in mountainous areas.

One line in the song reads "They own the milk and runny honey, and they're not quite the same," which suggests that those in power control the resources of the land, leaving little for the mountain people to sustain themselves. The song also touches on the idea of living under "fantasy oak trees" and creating sparks in the dark, which could be a metaphor for finding light in the midst of isolation and despair.

SFA have not been given enough credit for their beauty and uniqueness. Love thissong and what amazing scenery, fabulous photography.

Supergrass was everybody's second favourite band, but Super Furry Animal is everybody's favourite band they don't now yet.

Solitary Sorrow

Thank you for sharing this...it is a song close to my heart, as although I am English, the subject matter of being ostracised and discarded is here too, via communities and ways of life that are being destroyed by private landlordism, and also by way of the fact that life here is getting ever harder, especially if you are on a low income, have to claim invalidity benefits (like I do), are sick, a student, etc...I think, before anyones flames me, that this song is generally about unequality

Teethgrinder

I know this is a very old comment of yours but i just wanted to say I see where your coming from, I'd not thought of this song in that way-I'm from NE Scotland and so I take the song more at face value-the inevitability of change whether wanted or not, the beauty of an area being slowly eroded, the feeling of disconnect from city life (despite how close it is in miles it still seems as though its a world apart and despite not wanting to leave what you know in the "mountains" the pull of city life can be too much-"curiosity comes to plead with me" etc...), and the line about "hand me down culture" struck a chord. In the end its one of those songs that can be universal-it's meaning to different people may vary but the feeling the same, that's why it's a great song I guess :)

Dan Hare

Lovely to come back to this, Central Wales is a lovely undervalued place. Their live version at Glastonbury was great, but you can't beat the original. The guitar chord at 3:30 is sensational. Thanks for posting !

I love it when a furries song descends into techno.

harribo2005x

They do that also with No Sympathy.

Chris Cartwright

Ascends into techno... As mountain people we always strive to climb

Rodney Evans

or ascends...

Teethgrinder

Shows their roots doesn't it
